Vince Van Patten...The Absolute Rocks?, Nathaniel Brous, 10. Apr 2003 20:07

Sorry if you have read this already. I am gathering information.

Well...I have not seen mention of it, so I will bring it up. What the heck is the "absolute rocks" ? If it wasn't a catchphrase for "the absolute nuts" or "an absolute lock" before the Aruba airing, then I guess it is now. After Vince says it, it comes up on the screen to teach the uneducated that "the rocks" means the best possible hand. (I have only known that "the rocks" on table six give will give you no action.) They do it a second time when he says it again. Confused, I checked four different poker dictionaries. No mention. Either he screwed up and the WPT covered for him or it is some obscure byword used among "Hollywood connections in poker."

I will grant that it "somehow" could be some poker term I have never heard of, but if it is then he MISUSES the word. For example P.Gordon's KQ would NOT be "the rocks" The KK would be in that particular hand (from the players perspective) or QQ just looking at the board. If he did screw up, then let this be a lesson to us all. You state something, the media covers it, "it" becomes fact. ...wait I guess that is nothing new. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? - Nathaniel Brous

Hey Timmer,
Do you not see this as a problem? If he is seen as a vital part of the program that's fine (he is clean cut and has a recognizable name for those who are 30 and older). I have nothing personal against the guy. I only expect him to do a good job, and if that fails they should edit out erroneous or misleading information.

In this case, the WPT stated that "the rocks" was what VVP claimed it was (twice!). Many poker players will think his comment innocuous. I don't. I think that the WPT is a boon to poker and a wonderful idea. But... I expect better from it. - Nathaniel Brous

Agreed but a bracelet winner and not a tennis pro ( didn't he win at <insert prestegious tennis match here> one year ?;) should be in that spot

Agreed I was at the first WPT at the Bellagio, you might have seen me in the audience sitting next to my friend Barry T., was a great final table. The last two came off looking worse than a c level horror flick.

Can't wait for the M.S.T. 3000 version that would be "the absolute meteors, Nat "

Here here! Let's get Roy doing a commentary!

Actually, one idea might be having the talking head for the proletariat, but then releasing WPT on DVD with different commentary options so that you could get different opinions on the hands being played (just like having director commentary on) and then I'd love to hear what Roy had to say.

When you watch a sporting event, the commentater's will be people who were once professional players in that sport themselves.(IE. John Madden does a great job commentating football as to so does most of your ex- ball players.
However, I think that Dennis Miller (who is a comedian) should NOT be hosting monday night football- He just isn't knoweledgeable enough in that field. And (IMO) it takes away from the professionalism of that sport.
Well, I feel the same way when it comes to Vince Van Patten hosting a poker event. Grant it, he does play the game, but obviously not often enough to use the proper terminology. I think It should be hosted by someone we are all recognizable with, like Mike Sexton, Phil Helmuth, Daniel Negraneau etc...

4 POKER:)

I agree. Vince is a distraction and detract rather than adds to the show. I would LOVE to see/hear Negreano's take on things. My guess is that he is too smart to give up his insights live on air. Anyway, if Vince stays on, I will have to start muting when I watch...

Reminds me of having to listen to Jerry Van Dyke during the 2001 WPO.

Ugh!

Saying "the rocks" vs. "the nuts" may have had something to do with an attempt to keep the level of the program above what might offend some viewers new to poker.
