It seems like since the airing of the WPT on the travel channel, there has been a huge upping of the interest level in poker. This is great for all of us as it will be bringing the fishies pouring onto the tables. Ultimate Bet has just gone down to upgrade due to very much heightened demand to play since WPT.

I think this could be the best thing to happen to our craft since Rounders.

My friend and I were having a discussion the other day about something similar to what you wrote in about. We were talking about the WSOP, and he said, "I can't believe that someone I used to play with in the casino in my 15-30 game went out to Las Vegas and won the Big Event , (netting him $2,000,000)! This guy never played a tournament in his life. He wasn't even a professional player! He goes in there, makes all these ridiculous plays, gets extremely lucky, knocks out all the top notch tournament players, and then continues to add that this is "Bad For Poker ! I thought... How could that POSSIBLY be bad for poker? He felt that it made a mockery of the game and that what we do for our living now did not have as much meaning. He thought that everyone is now going to think that they can win a Big One, too... Hey Robert Varynoiky did and he was a Nobody!...
Well I say, "Hats off to you buddy, great job". For it's people like Robert who will encourage other people to try and accomplish the same.
Stories like that (IMO) only seem to help the poker community.
And the more people who will get involved with poker, the better.
And I agree with you on your comment about "Rounders " being one of the best things to happen to poker, absolutely.

Living in the UK i dont get to see this programe all you Shermans are raving on about, is it any good ? I bet it is no Late Nigt Poker ! :)

Anywat point being is it going to become a popular programme over there ? Are lots of people watching / talking about it who DONT play poker ?

Just interested as i play a lot of online poker at the moment and i guess a lot of people will have their first taste of poker here these days ! I wondered why i was seeing so many people i hadnt seen before on Paradise in the past few weeks, i presumed it was their promotion. That will explain all the A5o's that keep beating me :)

Cheers

Don't moan! At least you get Late Night Poker. Here in Canada we can't get WPT *OR* Late Night Poker. And try to convince a bar manager with a satelite system to put up poker during the NHL hockey playoffs at any bar in Canada - Good Luck! For that matter, see if you can find a bar that actually pays for the travel channel. I've had a nightmare trying to find a place to watch.

Absolutely right. Varkonyi winning is a great thing. When people out there can believe that a rank amatuer can go far...that poker is a skill game but mostly intelligence and not much in the way of experience, then we will get them streaming in.

I personally love it when some yahoo (usually from New York) comes into my casino and starts playing hold'em like he knows what he's doing, but is a giant fish. He looks so smug because he read the first chapter of Poker for Dummies and has an IQ over 120. He figures that we are all degenerate gamblers and that he will give us what for. Then he hits an amazing run of cards, but we still kick the crap out of him. Aaaahhhh...those are the kids that make life in the poker room worth living. I expect WPT will create a lot of them and it'll take at least a year before most of them get decent at the game.
