what's your favorite "Dog Hand"?, 4 POKER, 10. Apr 2003 14:38

| ON THE LIGHTER SIDE...I'm curious to know what everyone's favorite "dog hand " is in hold-em. We all have these hands that we just hate to fold regardless if it's 4 bets to us preflop! One day, you dragged in a monster pot with this hand and since then you can't let go of it! (well maybe not 4 bets, but you know what i mean)! My favorite is J-10; SUITED, UNSUITED, it doesn't matter, I would play it everytime. The only thing I can remember is winning a couple of big pots from making the nut straight (as this hand will always make the nut straight). I played this hand repeatedly, I didn't care who raised the pot, I was in! It took me several years to end the "so-called " relationship I was having with J-10! How can someone play a solid game of poker, and then go nuts when he/she see's their favorite piece of cheese! I'm really interested to know what "DOG" hands you like, and why? (just for fun)!! 4 POKER | ||

| I like 10 - 8s. Watched a great player bet up on me with it on numerous occasions in my early days of no-limit. (I say early days - I'm only 21!) Now want to emulate him by doing the same! Although on second thouhgts, not sure if you can consider this a 'dog' hand in no-limit? Stein | ||

| Nope. In no-limit, suited one-gappers aren't the end of the world. When they hit, they hit hard. But it's not exactly gravy either :) | ||

| Well, I think that when it is 4 bets to you and you play some crap hand, it is a recipe for disaster, but I do have a favourite. That is 7To - I love being able to bring it to the flop. Of course most of the time it going skidding into the muck, but I feel almost like it is a good omen when I get it in to big blind or on the puck with some ricoculous number (like 7) of limpers. 7To has always been good to me. | ||

| I don't know if it qualifies as a "dog hand", but the hand I can't fold is KcJc. I've hit two straight-flushes in my casino life, and I was holding that hand both times. Seems like a good enough reason to me, at least... Big John | ||

| If i " have " to play a random to throw people off it is ( i am ashamed to say ) Q6..... This is only once in a blue moon ( not every one ) and only if i feel i need to advertise a bit. Intersting question though. | ||

| Biggest pot I ever won was with JTs, I butchered that hand for a whole year afterwards. Backraise, cap, call three cold, whatever. Most of the time it was justifiable, but I would push that hand too much as well. Yep, guilty as charged - case of the dumbass. | ||

I used to play it the same way but realized (especially JTo) that it is a money loser most of the time. The worst is when you haven't seen a hand for an hour or so and your "pet" hand comes when you are UTG. The incredible urge to ram and jam is ALWAYS there... On a lighter note, I used to play with a guy whose favorite hand was T4o. He played it so much, we used to call it "Big Dan" or "Big Dan suited". Somehow, he seemed to win with it more than lose though...unreal.

| 97s has a nickname at Foxwoods, it's called an EOB deluxe in the lower limits where a player with those initials always plays it and 97o as well. | ||

| Not sure what all is considered a dog hand... but I'll throw away Ax offsuit about every time. (Still new and trying to play tight.) But I can't get myself to throw away Ax suited.... ever! I keep thinking NUT FLUSH... NUT FLUSH. But I am smart enough to throw it away when it misses. TK PS... I never play JTo. Is that a bad thing? | ||

| Ax off is garbage im a full game when you hit an A the only people who will stay with you are those who have you beat Ax suited you should be careful with, like you i have only been playing about two years but i slowly realised that this can be a real money drainer it aint that differnt from Ax off.... JT o can be played ( IMO ) if you can sneak in with a lot of callers but you need to be sure to get paid off if you do hit and also that the flop isnt jammed with bets all the time or else it will cost you too much when you do draw to it.... But then as they say it all depends....... > Not sure what all is considered a dog hand... but I'll throw away Ax offsuit about > every time. (Still new and trying to play tight.) | AX suited is fine to play, so long as you have enough players in the hand. It is something that you limp with in late position when enough people come in or in early position if you know that the texture is good and enough people will come in. Basically, I play AX suited in the same circumstances as suited connectors. If you hit just an ace you will almost always throw it away, but it is also nice when you have a board of XXY - then you're praying that somebody else has an X with a worse kicker. Likewise you can play it sometimes on a board wth two aces, in the hopes that the case ace is burried in the deck. Though generally it is a hand that you want for the flushiness. Remember that with two suited cards, your chance of making a flush is only about 4% if you don't make a flush, the nuttiness of it is irrelevant. | ||

| I'm partial to J9s. And I'm a little biased in favour of JTs/o lately after winning a few huge pots with it on flopped straights. I also find myself gritting my teeth when I muck my medium suited connectors and one-gaps in early position. I love playing 'em, but know it's a losing proposition to play 'em in early position. | ||

| heheh...I'm caught. I'm such a slacker. But nope, I don't think I'll be playing any cards online at least until the late afternoon...though at that point in time I really ought to be heading home and getting ready for the club tonight. And if this isn't a thread worthy of "Not Quite Poker" then I don't know what is :) | ||

| I like 10-Js as much as the next guy, but when I'm on the button and there are a lot of limpers I'm sometimes inclined to fire in a raise with 9-10s, 8-9s, and 7-8s. These suited connectors can pay off big on the button when they do connect, and it's great when you raise em pre-flop, flop a straight, and bet them as if they were a big overpair like AA and KK - that really jams up people's radar. I still like 10-Js but I figure on average when there are a lot of limpers ahead of me that they're playing weaks aces and kings, maybe even queens. If they're holding those cards that reduces the # of outs for 10-Js to make a straight - I've become accustomed to thinking about things like straight penalties by playing a lot of video poker and understanding the mediocre hands that most mediocre players tend to play, like Axo, Kxo, Kxs, Qxs, Jxs. | ||

| I have noticed a # of people referring to J 10 suited as a dog hand....this is not a dog hand at all with J 10 suited you can make the highest number of nut flushes...of course it is not a monster but it is not even close to a dog.... | ||

| It depends on the number of players in the hand. If you're UTG+1 and UTG raises, TJ-suited is something to throw away in a tight game. You're not getting odds on it and if you hit one of your cards it is likely not good. I've seen a lot of rage come off players who play TJ-suited, make a nut straight with a flushdraw and lose to a tight because the board is AKKQX | ||

When this hand is played pre-flop one must realize what type of betting was made in order to get a better picture on what flops could cripple his hand. When played in the right spot, you can make alot of money with this hand... HOWEVER, That being said, many players will over play this hand calling multiple raises from solid players pre-flop leaving them very few outs to improve. That is why I called the original post, "what is your favorite dog hand"? This hand, J-10 can also be a bow-wow!! 4 POKER

| Once in awhile, usually early in a session or when I'm on a rush, I like to come in out of position with a one gap small suited connector like 4-6s in a loose passive game. I like to do this when I think there are players in the game who get married to big pairs and big offsuit cards, and play them to the river no matter what. I like to flop a draw and play it as if it was made. If I miss I use it for advertising, if I hit, I can send that type of player on tilt. I'm certainly aware that these hands are DOGS in the truest sense! | ||
