NLH Question, Mark, 10. Apr 2003 09:25 | ||

| I was in aNL hold'em game and was wondering what to do in this situation. There is a small pre-flop raise with many callers. I floped 2 pair in late position and no-one came out betting strong. However, there is a 2 flush and 2 paint cards making for a couple of draws. The problem is my stack is only 1/2 the pot at this point. If i go all in, all reasonable draws will have odds to call, but if i don't bet i give a free card to a few draws. So is betting or checking the better alternative? If I check and the turn is a blank, I can go all in on the turn, with a bet that should fold the draws. What do you guys think? what about if my stack was only 1/3 the pot on the flop, would you check call to the river? mark | ||

| Someone else may bet at a blank on the turn which if you call or raise all-in will still give someone behind you odds for a good draw. You could also fill up on the turn and get no action with a half pot all-in bet. It's an ugly spot with your stack size, but I would just push all-in on the flop and hope to lose a few players that might have a pair which could beat you if they hit. It doesn't sound like you have much left to play with anyway if you check and fold when a scare card hits the turn. Get the money in while you still have the best of it. | ||

| Assuming that you are sure that you have the best of it at this point, you've really got to push all in. If you're lucky you'll take the pot by filling up or by drawing blanks. The important thing is that you don't wait until you are beat without putting money in. You are about 50/50 to win if there are 15 outs to other players to beat you, and chances are that there aren't 15 outs between them that don't redraw you to a tight. I think the only thing you can do here is push all in if you are fairly certain that your 2 pair is the best hand at the moment. | ||

| agreed with both you should go all in especially since you don't have a large stack you needn't worry much. 2 pair in hold'em is a dangerous hand and not all the strong. Although a little more info is need. Do you hold top 2, middle 2, or bottom 2? is there an A on board etc. I don't hesitate to put it all in at this point if I have an inconsequential amount, the only time I is when I've got a lot of chips and there are 1 or 2 guys with the same or greater amount of chips then I may have to thread a little more cautiously. | ||

| Thanks guys, it was top 2 pair i was holding. I went almost all-in ( for no good reason i held some back ) i kept about 10% of the total pot size back. I got one caller, this guy thought i was bluffing cause i didn't go all-in, he put me all-in and i ended up winning a decent pot. i really was not sure what to do at the time because of the multiple draw opportunities. I guessed and made the best possible decision. thanks again mark | ||

| Note that the player who paid you off is correct in forcing you all-in immediately on the flop for your last few chips if he's going to play the hand, whether or not he thinks you're bluffing. | ||
