| I have been playing online poker seriously since early January, all at low limits, .50/.100 to $2/$4, and $ 25 pot limit. I have logged 170 hours of .50/1.00, winning 64% of my sessions and am presently up $195.00. 102 hours of $1/$2, winning 61% of my sessions and I am up $43. I have played 28 hours of $2/$4, winning 50% of the sessions, but am down $293. Played 74 hours of $25 pot limit, winning 73% of my sessions and am up $ 340. I have experienced a wide variance in .50/1.00 and $1/$2, but my win percentage has always hovered between 61% to 67% for these limits. If I were to take out my 10 worst sessions at these limits I would be up another $ 600. The common thread among these killer losing sessions, is that I had a higher percentage of premium starting hands, AA, KK, QQ, & AK, but losing on most of them. This has almost made me hesitant to come out firing with them as it always seems at these limits that 5 or 6 players will always call the raise and then someone always hits the flush or straight on the end, costing me a ton of money. $2/$4 limits I have decided to stay away from at the present time, it obviously looks like I am not ready for that level. I just hope my results at pot limit continue and I won't complain. I guess my real question is this--Should my winnings be higher given the fact that I consistently win over 61% of my sessions? Any thoughts, suggestions, anaylsis of my stats would be greatly appreciated, especially from Mike & Roy. Thanks. | ||

| I think that you are doing fine in the low limits by your statistics and you need to keep plugging away, reading, and learning until you can move up. It is very important to be realistic about your play and thus, no player should ever say, "If you don't cound my worst X sessions then..." As for your sessions won percentage, I think that the standard for a winning player beating the game is that you should have 2 winning sessions for every 1 losing session...so 67% is par for the course. | ||

| Spartan51, First off I would like to say that you are probably ready, actually more than ready, to play at the 2-4. In fact I find the 2-4 limit as the worst group of players on the planet. The reason why you are not seeing a profit at the 2-4 is because there are too many fishes in the sea. What, did I say that? Yep I sure did. You see when choosing an ideal poker table it is like building a basketball team or cooking a cake. The Lakers wouldn't be good with 5 Shaq's, who would bring the ball down the court and shoot from the outside? And Betty Crocker wouldn't be a very good cook if she tried to make a cake with all flour and no sugar right? This is the same in picking a poker table. You want a good mixture of players, solid players, extremely tight players, loose passives, and total fishes who don't have a clue. This way once you have a feel for the table you have a better idea of what you can and can't get away with according to who is in the current hand with you. The problem with 2-4, especially online, is that at a 10 person table usually 7-8 players are extreme fish. That may sound great to some people out there, but to those of us who have put in enough hours to know better, it isn't. You see, you have to look at like this: Let's say you start the hand with AA. If there are 7 people seeing the flop no matter what the cost every hand, then you have to pretend that you are playing AA vs. 1 person with 12 cards to make a better hand with. You get this by figuring the other 6 players in the hand each having 2 cards each. Now if you could play someone heads up and let them start with AA, but you in return get 12 cards to play with the board would you? Of course you would. That is why getting your Aces cracked by a 95os, when some idiot makes 2 pair on the river after calling a capped preflop, is not unlikely. IMHO, for what it is worth, I find that the .50-1.00 and even lower limits are played at a much more even keel. I think that many serious beginners who have read books and are trying to play a good game of poker start here and by the time you have moved up to the 2-4 level you run into too many guys that have become "bored" with trying to play good poker and have fell into the trap of chasing anything that could possibly win them a big pot. This is also a level that most people feel comfortable "even the fish" of making a sizeable win or loss. Many people can't get motivated to try and chase runner runner draws and go on a big run at the .50-1.00 range because a big rush might make them a 40 dollar winner, whereas at the 2-4 they might could get lucky and go on a 3-4 hundred dollar rush. Now don't get me wrong, you want a few fish in there to feed off of, but I just find that at the 2-4 level there are too many cards you have to dodge hand after hand after hand. I consistently lost at 2-4 some time ago, but always found myself winner when playing 8-16 or 5-10, and even 10-20. I know this may not be possible for your bankroll. But if I were you I would stick to either the low-low limits or that 25 buy in NL you were talking about. Good Luck To You Chad | ||

| Hey, I wasn't quite sure where you were headed with that one, ( the Betty Crocker, Laker's analogy), but once I read on I liked it ! A funny, yet unique way of looking at it. 4 POKER | ||

| Indeed, the phenomenon of "schooling" or implicit collusion is a documented one. Put too many fish at a table and it becomes a game of bingo, since you pretty much have to hold onto your good cards, but somebody is very likely to beat you...if it is extreme enough it can become a total crapshoot and good players can have trouble beating the rake. | ||

| Thanks Chad & stidioh for responding and your kind words in regards to my stats. I was stunned that Chad felt by looking at my stats that I was ready to move up, if my bankroll would allow it. I was curious what was it about my stats that told you I could possibly be playing at higher limits? I wasn't discounting my ten worst sessions, but rather looking for the reasons why they occurred and I think Chad hit it on the nose--Table Selection. My worst sessions have occurred when there is 5 or 6 players who will call every raise and that will stay to the river with any kind of draw at all. In the future, I think my best move would be just to find another table if I find myself in that situation. Would you agree? Playing online makes it difficult to hand pick the table you play at for two reasons, usually at the site I play at there can be long wait lists at each table and once you get to the table it has totally changed because players jump in and out of games so quickly. Any sugesstions? Once again thanks. Spartan51 | ||

| When selecting a table, look at the size of the average pot. The higher this is the better the table is to play at, since if you play tight you will be taking large pots when you win. You want to be playing with a maniac and with a bunch of players who make calls against pot odds. | ||
