I've read a number of articles from Mike advocating shorthanded games. It seem to me that the profit from these games is eat up by the rake, What am I missing in this picture?

It really depends on the players at the table. In general the rake eats you alive, but sometimes it can be ok. For instance at Brantford I play in session fee games. When you have half the players at the table, everybody's abilities are amplified. So if I'm at a table that is just beatable and half the players leave, it is like you are doubling the session fee. Normally that would make me want to leave too and break the table, but when there is a ridiculous "action player" - somebody who plays literally every hand and doesn't fold until the river, then you want to be in a shorthanded game because you are going to be able to pound on him more often. This guy will more than pay the session fee for everybody at the table.

Take it to its logical conclusion of heads up. If I can play heads up with a total beginner, then I'll pay my session fee and his for the priveledge of beating up on him.

But in general, more people at the table is a good thing...especially when there is a rake, because you pay a rake for every pot you win and the fewer people in the game, the more often you drag a pot.

Most card rooms reduce the rake when the game gets shorthanded. Sometimes you have to negotiate with the floor manager. They will usually agree to half rake with five players at hold'em instead of risking the whole table breaking up and no further drop.

Indeed. The Brantford 5-10 rakes 10% to $5, but when there are less than 7 players they cap the rake at $3.

Here in Kansas City all limits are pot raked (I think time rake is prohibited by Missouri state law), but the dealers have been given the authority to automatically go to $1 rake when the game gets below six handed. That is unless some yahoo playing under 10-20 (with jackpots) objects when it is five or six handed.

Ouch , they aint doing you any favors there.

Here in LV they usually take one or the last one. That is they take one dollar and that is it. Or the first one and the last one . The Mirage However will bring in a off duty dealer and prop him up . They will usually play one hand then get up. Which bites in many ways. I like heads up because I can get more aggressive and not many players got a clue how to play heads up.

I get the feeling you would be a pretty tough player to beat heads up timmer based on your posts here... :)

Mind you that is $5 and $3 in Canadian dollars, so it is about 75% of what it would be in American.

Hi

A good shorthanded player will make a better HR than a good ring game player playing the same limit. Shorthanded play has more hands dealt, more opportunities to play hands and the play of hands becomes a more important issue than in a ring game. All of those issues favor the good player!
