Anyone ELSE disappointed in the poker portrayal tonight in "Lucky"?, Easy E, 8. Apr 2003 20:31

| Did they HAVE to do a bad ripoff of Mike's tells/patter? Did they HAVE to make a supposedly pro poker player, winner of a $1M tournament, a degenerate gambler? (I thought his wife's death slide him over, but on seeing the rebroadcast, he was broke when she died). I think the show, as a simple show with some humor, could be fun, but PLEASE!!!! Can I beat the producers over the head with a WPT video??? That's legal, right? | ||

| I thought the show was pretty disappointing, but pilots usually suck for some reason, and some of the episodes to come look like they have some promise. The portrayal of poker players was very fictional and very exaggerated, and I don't think they ever really showed which cards Lucky won the W.S.O.P. with or what he was against. At the end of the show "Ed" was a total joke, I mean have you ever sat down at a table and had a big stack tell you how he was going to ass-ram you? From a purely techical standpoint the look of the final table at the W.S.O.P. was a total joke. There were ridiculous mountains of chips on the table, which would have been colored up in smaller stacks, and what's up with all the racks that were on the table? I've never seen a rack on the table at the W.S.O.P., and for all I know it's not allowed. Even though it's a small time FX channel show I don't think it would have been too hard to consult with a knowledgeable poker player about how things really are, but I get the feeling authenticity is not that big a deal anyhow. One cool thing about the show was the shots of Fremont Street, it makes me want to get back to Binion's for some Hold Em and to Golden Gate for a shrimp cocktail. | ||

| I agree that the poker piece of the show was lame. However, I thought the scene where the dude kept throwing himself in front of the car was a laugh riot. Also, I thought Ed was pretty funny too...I actually have sat down at a table with someone as drunk and loud as that and found it pretty amusing. Plus, Lucky's comment to him "Say good night Ed" as in "I will be the one doing the ass-ramming" was pretty funny. Maybe I was just punchy last night. | ||

I was going to give my opinion on Lucky, but Shorn covered each point or moment I was going to make. I can only add that when people get very involved in poker, it colors their thoughts. It can be difficult to watch a show that contains poker and think of it as pure entertainment. I can only guess at what the average Joe (non poker player) might think. Lucky might have got it close enough for them. Still the scene with his friend and the cars had me laughing out loud (something I have not done in a while). - Nathaniel Brous

| the show, obviously, was done here in Las Vegas. my wife and i thought it was terrible. In additon, it reinforced the poker image we are trying to get rid of. Namely, addicts, drunks, loan sharks and a stupid scene at the beginning wit te player who looked like Slobidan Milosevic. I do a little extra work on movies and i wouldnt go near that show. my .02 fordo | ||
