How quitting smoking can make you a winning player., Nathaniel Brous, 7. Apr 2003 22:44

Hi all. This is just an idea I have been kicking around in my head...another wonderful poker analogy for everyone to enjoy. Poker seems analogous to just about anything if given enough time.

Let us assume that you know how to play poker pretty well, yet still have a ways to go to give up your day job. How do you become a consistent winner? Give up smoking. What you say...you don't smoke? Really. Let me tell you about the average smoker. He (She) smokes for a number of reasons. He smokes because, "it feels good, especially after a good meal." He smokes because it releases tension. He smokes because he is addicted to nicotine. He smokes because he has made it a HABIT.

This is not an anti-smoking post, not in the least. Heck...I am not even talking about smoking. The smoker is aware that smoking will "likely" kill him eventually. He just makes a trade. He is happier "at this moment" (he gets through the day etc.) because he chooses to smoke. He entertains the idea of quitting smoking "someday," but doesn't worry about it today. Besides...quitting smoking is one of the most difficult things that many of us never succeed at.

But! There is hope. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. YOU have a way out. It is a little thing really, at first. It is only through "time" that we can see its full scope. It is called a choice. You have the knowledge. Take the next step and use it. The next time you "know" you shouldn't continue with the hand DON'T. It will be painful of course, and I sympathize. But guess what? It gets easier. It won't happen overnight, there may be some false starts, but if you truly want it, it will happen.

Every time you do it (keeping a leak plugged) it will become easier. Eventually that plug will cement and you can turn your attention to the smaller leaks, the not so obvious ones. I think it was M.C. who said the secret to this game was to play your best, all the time. Simple, right? But...it is one of the most difficult things that many of us never succeed at. - Nathaniel Brous

And here I thought you were going to address the "money saved = bankroll increase" issue....

Actually, when you're good you should be able to smoke without releasing tells. That said, if you're in a nonsmoking room, it wastes a lot of time to go and have one and the smokers play a lot more hands in the blinds than they should.

Hey stdioh, I agree 100% with what you say. It's just that the post had nothing to do with smoking related tells. - Nathaniel Brous

Indeed...that's really rather offtopic, isn't it.

I'll make amends. I find that when somebody is smoking and they take a drag and hold it in longer than they should, it means that they have a hand. When they are betting and have made an effort to avoid taking a drag, they are usually on a bluff and trying not to trigger a calling response.

Just a couple of things that I've noticed though I usually don't play in smoking rooms. I'm sure that Mike Caro could do a lot better in talking about smoking related tells.

you may have alluded to it, in some vague way that my 2 re-readings of your post didn't find.....

My point was- the money you're not spending on cigarettes can go directly to your bankroll building. It was just being "wasted" before....

Nate, if you could point me to the line that you were referring to, so I don't feel any more stupid than I do right now, I'd appreciate it....

Anyone ELSE disappointed in the poker portrayal tonight in "Lucky"?, Easy E, 8. Apr 2003 20:30

Did they HAVE to do a bad ripoff of Mike's tells/patter? Did they HAVE to make a supposedly pro poker player, winner of a $1M tournament, a degenerate gambler? (I thought his wife's death slide him over, but on seeing the rebroadcast, he was broke when she died).

I think the show, as a simple show with some humor, could be fun, but PLEASE!!!!

Can I beat the producers over the head with a WPT video??? That's legal, right?

Hey Easy E,
That's exactly what I did. I apologize for my comment. I thought that if one was to follow my line of reasoning they would come to many conclusions, your comment being one of them. I have endeavored to correct my original post with "Quit smoking Revamp." I believe my thoughts are expressed in a more transparent fashion in the correction. Again, my apologies. - Nathaniel Brous

I think you sorta covered it with the "leaks" comment (that's what leaks are all about, right? Saving money?)

No apology necessary.
