Online win rates realistic?, Kevin T, 7. Apr 2003 10:45

I often hear about players who claim to make 3-5BB's/hr online in limits from 2-4 and up. Is this possible without cheating over a long time period? Are most of the players who make these claims just running good? Could some of the site owners be dropping these numbers as an incentive to the players? What is realistic long term?

Online games, especially the short tables, go much faster than B&M games, thus, if you are good at table selection, a higher win rate is possible. For instance, I was playing a five handed table last night that was averaging 100+ hands an hour. I won four hundred dollars at a 3-6 table in a few hours. This is of course not a typical session, but serves to illustrate that faster games mean you have much higher hourly rate potential. Of course, if you are playing with better players or are running bad, it also means you can lose money very quickly, but I would not be surprised if the really good players can average over 3 BB's per hour.

I would say that there are games out there that can be consistently beat for 1.5 BB/hour and since you play hands twice as fast on the internet and since the rakes are smaller and the tokes are nonexistent, I would say that 4 BB/hour is not out of the realm of possibility. I would call it implausible for most players, but not impossible for some players.

Ok, I gotta ask an ignoratn question... well, uh... because I am ignorant. What is meant by 1BB per hour? I am assuming that you mean 1 Big Bet per hour. Which on a $3-$6 table I would think would mean that you win $6 over one hour. Is this correct. Because this amount seems low to me. I have very very little experience so be patient with me.

But that last time at a B&M casino I played $2-$4 for about 3 hours and won $80. That would be 20BB or 7BB per hour. Just played online for the first time this weekend. I won $30 at a 25¢-50¢ table in two hours which comes out to about 30BB per hour. Which I know you really need to average this stuff out over a longer period of time. But I know that I am not a good player yet. And I may have just been getting some good cards but I would expect good players to do even better than that.

Help a newbie!

Thanks,

TK

while you will have many good sessions and many bad sessions over your poker career, if you can manage to a life time average of +1BB an hour, you will be a very good player.

You will have big swings both ways+-20BB/hr on occassions. the 1 BB / hour goal is only relevant after at least 100 hours of play.

My win rates in live game fluctuate regularly between 1 and 1.5 BB/hour. I've had an 8 hour session where I've lost 80 big bets and I've had a 2 hour uber-rush where I've made 80 big bets. The short term is irrelevant. In live games spread at casinos, it is very hard to beat any game for more than about 1-1.5 BB per hour. At the cheap games the rake really cuts into your bottom line and at the higher limits your opponents gain skills that cut into your bottom line. Many high limit pros are very happy if they can get 0.5 BB/hr consistently.

To make a long story short, the long term in poker is very very very very very long...and the short term is entirely about luck.

I've won just over 4 BB per hour playing two .5-1 tables online for over 1000 hours(equivelent to over 2000 hrs in a B&M Casino). I know you were talking about higher limits but It should be possible as long as there is a big difference between your skill level ,and the skill of the other players.

I think at very low limit tables online, 4 BB/hour is possible for an excellent player. Maybe even 5. Though I think you could profit a lot more by moving up in limits.
