Vegas or Southern California?, Bill A., 6. Apr 2003 15:02

I intend to move to either vegas or southern california within a couple of years to play poker regularly. Even though my intent is to play in many tournaments including the major WPT events, I plan on continuing in my current profession. Anyway, I would welcome any opinions on which is the better place to live, Las Vegas or Southern California. Thanks everyone in advance for your comments.

there is no state income tax in Nevada .....Yet . But if the corporate casinos get their way there will be.

There are more games and generally much looser players in California.
the collections in california are much higher. the wages in California are higher over all.

In Nevada poker is the red headed step child of the casinos industry . I am convinced that with out some of the old time poker players inside the casino managments they would move in nickle slots in a heart beat. There are no plain card rooms. there is a law prohibiting any poker room to open unless they have a hotel. Go figure on that one. poker players are scum to the majority of the casino management . its damn near impossible to get a decent comp out of a poker room with out tons of hours. IF you play flop games its ok. but it really sucks for any other game here .

My advice is go to california and get on the state government tit. The traffic sucks but there is OK public transpo.

the one thing NV has going for it over CA is that residential property is still fairly inexpensive and is going up in value .

Thanks TImmer,

I appreciate your comments. I am also leaning towards California. My wife still is a little shaky about earthquakes though.

Hi there stdioh,

I live in the Bay Area, but don't have a car so I mostly play at the casino closest to my house, the Oaks Card Club. Do your friends happen to mention which casino or casinos they think has the best games? I like the Oaks, but it seems like the games are really loose at low limits, but get MUCH tougher when you go up.

If all the fish are playing someplace else, maybe I'll just have to get a car.

Thanks!

I'm not sure where they play, but I think that the Oaks has come up in conversation as a good room to play in. I wouldn't be able to tell you what is good though unless you want to start playing in Ontario. :)

Thanks Carl,

That is a real good point. Less tax is always a good thing!

HI NOISEBOY, MAYBE YOU HAVEN'T VISITED LAS VEGAS IN A WHILE, BUT THE TWO MAJOR CARDROOMS ALSO WENT NON-SMOKING TWO YEARS AGO. THE BELLAGIO AND THE MIRAGE POKER ROOMS ARE NOW SMOKE-FREE .
YES, YOU CAN SMOKE AT THE HORSESHOE AND AT SOME OTHER SMALL POKER ROOMS, HOWEVER IF YOU PLAN ON LIVING IN LAS VEGAS, MOST OF YOUR TIME SPENT PLAYING POKER WILL BE DONE AT EITHER THE BELLAGIO OR THE MIRAGE. THE HORSESHOE REALLY DOESN'T GET MUCH ACTION EXCEPT FOR THE WORLD SERIES.

Hi
I visit both Califirnia and Las Vegas twice a year and in my opinion, California has it all. The perfect weather, beautiful beaches, and the BEST poker available!
Vegas is a fun place to visit, but to try to make a living playing poker there would be nothing more then an upseting experience for you.
Aside from any tournament action Vegas may hold, there are really only 2 places to play poker at, one Bellagio, the other, the Mirage.
Neither of the two will offer you a big enough selection to choose from.
Sure the Bellagio is beautiful, however... the poker room is filled with professionals, who needs that? I stayed in Vegas last year for 3 months and i felt like i was trapped. 110*- 120* degrees every day, no water surrounding me, and basically, if you took away the lights, you'd be looking at a concrete jungle, sorry! Go to Vegas for a week or two, you'll have a blast, but to consider staying there for a long period of time will, (and you can trust me on this one!) drive you absolutely nuts!!
That being said, the cost of living in California will be a lot greater then in Las Vegas. That you will have to consider.
However, if you are thinking about playing poker for a living, the games in California can be quite lucrative. They have many rooms to choose from, they treat you unbelievably great, free food (and good food I may add), and that will save you money when on a budget, and you can not, i said CAN NOT beat California for poker. The most selection of card rooms, the most selection of games, all limits, put together in a beautiful and healthy environment. I live in Atlantic City, and the action is good here too, but I have played all over the country from Atlantic City, Foxwoods, Minnesota, Mississippi, Las Vegas, and California, and the place you ought to be is a place by Beverley !!!!!

4 Poker:)

Thanks 4 Poker,

I appreciate your spirited response. Now if I can convince my wife not to be concerned about earthquakes, it is California hear we come!
