most you've won/lost online one session?, jdsalinger, 6. Apr 2003 01:32 | ||

| ok so I've bought in $100 at 3 poker sites 2 gave me 15% bonus dep. And I know people won't believe but I turned $115 at one site to $2000 and at another to $2600 at one point in time(-$100 at poker stars). Well the $2600 has dropped to 2300 but the 2k at paradise was dwindled down to $50 brought up $1800. Went back down to $100 and then back to 1200. Proceeded to go drop to $30 then built it back to $900 where it stands today. I usually build it up to around $600 then get started in the 20/40 game which has lots of action but of course you have a lot of variance and this is where my bankroll gets built but also takes some beatings. Now of course I plan on taking some of it out once I get to a certain level. Any tips? Because honestly I feel like absolute sh!t when I've been up a bunch only to lose it almost all. Work my ass off at the little games and tourney's to build it only it watch it fall again. It's very depressing eventhough I'm in the positive. First week I built it up in 2 days only to shamefully lose almost all of it in one 3 or 4 hour span from 1-5am. Disgusted I didn't play any poker for 5 days(couldn't bare to look at any cards). Came back made an improbable comeback to 1800 in 1.5 days only again to lose almost all of it from the 2-5am playing time. The story goes on. I never do this at the B&M casinos as my play is limited to 3 hrs. But online after I'm done with my classes and programs I will sit 10+ hrs. on my laptop playing online. Just wanted to know what everyone's experience online is like and if everyone experiences a LOT more swings online versus the card rooms. | ||

| It sounds to me that you are playing at much too high of a limit for the br you build. 50 big bets is not enough to absorb the swings of a 20/40 game on paradise. If it upsets you to go through these swings, why not stick to a lower limit until your roll is sufficient to play 20/40. Its not 20/40, but playing 5/10 (or somewhere around there) and 2000 should allow you to build up. Just my two nickles | ||

| I think you're overplaying your bankroll (and possibly to a lesser extent your ability). Stay in the smaller games where the "luck" factor won't hurt you as much. Most people recommend having a BR of 200-400 BB to play a given limit, so if you're looking to play 20/40 you should have somewhere around 8000 - 16000. If you play those middle and (upper) lower limits where you're more comfortable (and successful) then over time you should be able to build up the bankroll you need to play the higher limits. Poker is a marathon, not a sprint. just my .02, jHE | ||

| I've improved my online games by keeping a records of my game. It is very important in any money making venture and a lot easier in online games and players then the live games. My stardard deviation or "swings", has turned into a more stable slope of profit. | ||

| I've done exactly the same thing several times. I've learned the hard way, you simply DO NOT MOVE UP until you have 300 BB's at the higher level. The swings will eat you up at the bigger games, even if you play perfectly, next thing you know you're back at a 1-2 table for the next two months trying to build it back up. You might have read all the books and be good enough to play 20-40, but unless you have $12000, you're kidding yourself if you think you aren't going to go broke. | ||

| Why don't you seek help? If you're playing between classes, you're thinking of it during classes. Not good. Sounds as if you're relatively new to on-line games. If so, expect burnout soon. Think about that pace 6 months from now. Not realistic. Only trying to prevent that one killer session that gets you so pissed, and broke, that you won't want back in. | ||

| There will definately be alot more swings when you play on-line vs. playing live. There are so many new and inexperianced players who will play hands that shouldn't be played and will give you so many bad beats. They also deal out so many more hands on-line, which will involve you in more pots in a shorter time period, resulting in alot of swings. (sometimes on the + side and sometimes on the - side. Having said that, you must feel comfortable in what ever limit you chose to play in. If winning alot of money in one game only leads you to go to a bigger game and blow it all back, maybe you should stick to a certain limit and stay there. Moving up to the next limit when your bankroll is sufficient is fine, but to play low limit and then jump to a 20-40 game is too much of a risk. Do you even realize how big 20-40 can be when you play on-line?? You can lose 2 to 3 thousand easy with the fast pace of on-line poker. you might be better off playing in a live poker room, for when you play on line, i think you get caught up too much. it is fun to play on-line, i know, i do, too, but i never go from a small limit game to a high limit game. hey, i worked too hard for that money and i refuse to risk it all in one session. you'll be surprised how all those modest wins add up!!! Try it for a month or two and see how well you can do just by playing at a limit that is suitable for you. start feeling good about yourself again. We all make mistakes, but when you repeat them over and over, you will only have yourself to blame. good luck (they post this in every casino in America, and I think you should read this over and over and over!!) here it is: BET WITH YOUR HEAD, NOT OVER IT. | PLAYING ON-LINE IS FUN, I PLAY TOO BUT MOSTLY FOR RELAXATION. AND WHEN I DO PLAY ON-LINE I STICK TO THE LOWER LIMITS AS TO AVOID ANY BIG SWINGS. THE WINS ADD UP SO THERE'S NO NEED TO GAMBLE IT UP AND PLAY A LIMIT THAT IS OVER YOUR BANKROLL REQUIREMENTS. WHEN I PLAY IN THE CASINO, THERE IS WHERE I WILL PLAY AT A MUCH HIGHER LIMIT (FEEL COMFORTABLE DOING SO), AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD TAKE A BREAK FROM THE COMPUTER AND PLAY SOME LIVE POKER. YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO THINK MORE CLEARLY, YOU'LL DEFINATELY BE ABLE TO SLOW THE PACE DOWN A BIT, AND YOU WON'T BE JUMPING FROM GAME TO GAME, AND LIMIT TO HIGHER LIMIT. WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY IS ,YOU NEED A LITTLE BIT MORE STABLIZATION. MY SWINGS ARE VERY MINIMAL IN THE CASINO. 4 POKER | ||
