A10 offsuit early position, jdsalinger, 6. Apr 2003 00:49

I hate this hand even middle or late but somehow I see others winning with it from early position. I've folded it twice in EP tonight in an inconsequential low limit 5/10 HE game eventhough I knew some fish after me might play A rag. I don't bother with it now. I'd like to hear you're opinions.

How are you making the determination that other people are winning with it? You'd have to be with them and track every single time they played it, which is impossible to do. Trust your own instincts. It's a trap hand from early.

Even in a very fishy game, I let it find the muck from the first three positions after the big blind. From there on if no one has entered the pot it's raise or fold, depending on the type of players behind me and my current table image. If there are players behind me that often call two cold or reraise, I usually let it go. From middle position with players who have called, I usually let it go. In the cutoff if the button is tight and there are other players in the hand I might limp. Generally I consider this a situational semisteal hand preflop. Yesterday I played this for one bet preflop from early position and got punished. Flop KQJ rainbow capped three way. Nine on the turn raised out the hitchhiker on the button. River a queen, at least the big blind checked his JJ. I don't think ATo has positive expectation except in certain late position short handed spots.

Muck it early or middle almost every time. Late position-raise or fold. I will rarely play it in middle position (always raise if played) depending on the texture of the game. I never play it early.

AT is usually a pig of a hand. If I have it in late position and it is folded around to me or I get 1 limper, then I'll usually raise in order to drive out other players...if I can get heads up with the big blind or limper, then I might be able to win without improving or I could steal the blinds with it. Generally, it is a hand to fold though. If there are tonnes of limpers (if I'm playing in a miracle loose passive game) then I might just call for value and hope to hit 2 pair or better with it.

Any which way you slice it, it is a hand that will only win you very marginal profits and even then only if you play it very well on the flop. When it doubt, toss this piece of cheese away.

A -10 is a good hand to steal the blinds with in a tight game in late position. In a loose, passive game you can limp in with it cheaply, however in a loose, aggresive game, you'd be better off throwing it away.
It is not a premium hand by any means, but i think you already knew that.
Keep playing solid poker, don't get caught up in what hands you might have won with, just play your best game.
