Small Blind Question, Pkrrookie, 4. Apr 2003 23:29

What kind of hands should I be playing from the sb when it is half of a little bet? If it was 2/3 of a bet, i would probably play just about any two cards. Since it is half, how much more selective should i be? Now I usually play anything that I would play from late position plus connectors down to about 65 an offsuit Aces and Kings, and suited cards if there's a few limpers. Does this sound reasonable, too loose, or too tight?
Thanks in advance

It sounds to me that you have it about right. Except I never play KXo. Also, I'm very careful about AXo. It depends on both the number and quality of the limpers. IMO-

You probably should avoid the king-rag hands with several callers already in. Some one gapped hands can be played if you're not uncomfortable using the whole deck. 75o can be worth a 1/2 bet call getting 9:1, if the game is generally passive after the flop. There isn't a big difference in the straight making ability of one-gapped vs. connected cards. It's the two gapped hands that are substantially harder to hit a good flop with. Unless the player in the big blind is loose/aggressive and likes to raise with less than great cards out of the blind, these one-gapped middle cards are not bad.

It really depends on how many players are seeing the flop. With several players in already, you can put that extra bet in with small connectors. But with one caller it might be better off to just save that extra bet for another time and throw your hand away.
Remember, a bet saved is money won!!

If you're trying to find a good rule of thumb, think of it this way: You're in for half price, but you also have the worst position. You can usually limp in the SB with hands that you would limp with on the puck.

I'll very occaisionally come in on the SB with AXo (NEVER with KXo...NEVER EVER!), but usually I won't limp there without something like 78o and tonnes of limpers or JKo with one limper...these are more or less my standards for the puck as well....though I generally won't play AXo from the puck unless I'm trying to steal the blinds with it.
