With publication of Slim's memoir, Amarillo Slim in a World Full of
Fat People, just a month away, I wanted to thank everyone on Uniterd Poker Forum for their contribution to research (I even included the forum in the acknowledgments). To the first five people who post to this message with their favorite story about Slim, I'll send advanced readers' copies of the book.

Here is what Jeff Simpson had to say:

"Slim and Dinkin capture the flavor of road gambling, proposition
betting and old Las Vegas in Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat
People. Add it to the library of the best gambling books ever
written."
-Jeff Simpson, Las Vegas Review-Journal

Who is Amarillo Slim?
Oh yeah, I think I saw him on the Tonight Show when I was a little kid.

I love the story of Slim playing ping pong with frying pans myself. Apparently, he put in a big wager against some pro tennis player that he could beat him at a game of ping pong if he got to chose the paddles and they played with the same paddles. Naturally, slim had been practicing with 12 pound skillets.

From what I've been told he played another match with some Taiwanese ping pong pro and his weapon of choice was a coke bottle.

Amarillo Slim one time bet a guy he could hit a golf ball a mile... The guy said it would have to be off the top of a mountain. Slim said, nope on a flat surface. The guy bet him $10,000.00. So Slim took him in January to a frozen lake, and using a frozen golf ball, hit the damned thing nearly two miles!

They did a takeoff of this story in the Kevin Cosner film on golf, "Tin Cup"

Let me know if I qualify, Greg and I'll send you my address.

Now that I think about it, wasn't this story also attributed to A. Rothestein, the Black Sox Scandel planner?

Another story I liked..., Easy E, 3. Apr 2003 16:20

...indicative of the kind of betting schemes Slim would pull off, was the bet that he made about getting someone to eat one quail a day for a month (which evidently is hard to do?) then using identical twins to pull it off.

I'm pretty sure he's refering to personal stories regarding slim....

but if he's not here's one that almost counts...

I'm a college student and I was having a rough day. I'd gone to the library to catch up on some studying, but as I usually do when I should be studying I was browsing UPF. I saw a post that had a link where you could read the introduction of Slim's book (this was a month or so ago?). Anyways, I go to a small, uptight, conservative, chrisitian college and a lot of people would look down on people that play poker. It gets worse.

So I'm sitting there in the the (quiet) study room in the basement of the library reading the intro to slim's book. As someone who is realtively new to the game of poker (and young enough that I don't remember any of Slim's exploits first hand) and I can't help but bust out laughing a few times. People keep giving me dirty looks, and I don't really care because the material is just that good, eventually someone says something to me ("Do you mind I'm trying to study") and I have to restrain myself...but it was definately hard to do.

I love how he sets up the guy for the second ping-pong match...milking it for literally all it was worth...making him wait a month and the whole time the sucker is thinking slim will choose frying pans again the whole while slim's been practicing with a coke bottle...then when everyone's ready for slim to pull those frying pans out of his satchel (I love the fact he uses the word satchel) instead he goes over and buys a couple of cokes...hands one to the table tennis player and tells him that's his paddle...what a riot! Slim sure sounds like someone that would be fun to meet...but I'd be damn sure I never made a bet with him.

Even if I dont' qualify for the free copy I'll be happy to pay for it...(although I wouldn't refuse getting it for free), and if I get a free copy I promise to recommend it to at least 10 other people. :-)

Take care,
jHE

Paul Stine, Stdioh, Easy E, Nathaneil Brous, JasonHoldem: Please send an email to me at greg@ventureliterary.com, and I'll send you an advanced reader's copy. Thanks. -Greg

Here is just a snippet of Nick Christenson's review:
"Amarillo Slim Preston is arguably the most compelling personality in
the world of gambling, and his memoir, Amarillo Slim in a World Full
of Fat People, is every bit as entertaining as we might hope. The
bottom line is that this book is outrageously entertaining, just as
much as anyone who knows of its subject could possibly expect. Each
story is more amazing than the next, and the only disappointment comes when the final page is turned. Amarillo Slim and Greg Dinkin have done us all a marvelous service by capturing these amazing escapades in print for generations to come."

Greg- got my free proof copy, Easy E, 10. Apr 2003 08:34

the intro chapter was a good lead in- should be a fun read!

Two sidebar things so far:
1) The William Morrow flyer that was inserted (with the various "Slim's Pointers" lists)- is that going to be part of the final book? Breezing through the book, I only found the first list , "Top Ten Keys to Poker Success" in my uncorrected proof copy... so I'm glad I got the flyer!

2) UPS shipping- not that you can probably do anything about this, but when they start shipping the REAL book, with the good cover, I don't think you want people to have one end get wet, making the book wet (lucky it was a cheap cover, dried out okay) Maybe the shipping package needs to be better, or shrink-wrap the book itself?

Anyway, thanks for the "contest" and the opportunity to win the book!

PS- you "owe" me a picture! Page 148.... ;)

I've always liked the story about one of Slim's bets that has never lost. He'll bet someone a large amount as usual (I've heard 50k) that he can guess which particular sugar cube a fly will land on. Of course he knows which cube the fly will land on because he has wet the cube to attract the fly.
