Can I beat them?, stein, 3. Apr 2003 08:25

Ok. I'm a young 21 year old Brit. This is my story.

As a student of law and lover of mathematics, with plenty of spare time and like-minded friends, I enjoy my poker.

I love the game, have read extensively, have lightning quick mental arithmetic and spotting tells is perhaps my strongest ability.

I've only been playing three years, although I play, and in all honesty, consistently beat on-line no-limit hold 'em games. I gain even better results in pot-limit omaha home games (weak-ish opposition). My tournament record at casinos is perhaps more impressive. I've a regular final table seat in £10/£25/£50 re-buy no/pot-limit hold'em tournaments of 80-100 runners. My tournament profit for the last five months alone amounts to a little over £5000 (US$8000). The established regulars there (Late Night Poker celebrities) respect my play and often comment on my impressive showings.

Now, I apologise for blowing my trumpet horribly but this all leads to a question. Am I talented or just another new wannabe?

Have read many of your responding posts and definitely respect your opinions.
Stein.

I think your timespan is a little short but it looks like you are on the right track. Step up limits if your bankroll allowes you and keep accurate track of your results! If you keep winning you must do something right. ;-)

GL and might see you @ Paradise

Sounds to me like you're a very solid player. I would suggest that you book a vacation to Vegas and throw a little of your profit into entering a couple of big tournaments. Play a couple of WSOP satelites and see how you fair against the big boys.

YOU MAY BE ONE OF THOSE LUCKY PEOPLE!
BUT YOU SAY YOU ARE A LAW STUDENT?
PLEASE DON'T GIVE THAT UP.
IF YOU CAN BALANCE THE SCALES, (NO PUN INTENDED)

Well, luck's a funny thing.

If you've been lucky so far, then we can't know whether you're talented.

If you haven't been lucky, then you must be talented.

Are you lucky?

The only way to know if you've been lucky or not is to play so much poker that it's statistically impossible to still be lucky.

By that time, if you are not talented, you will be broke. And then we'll all know how you rate.

I'm sorry, it's late at night, and I'm getting silly. I certainly mean no offense -- congratulations on your great success so far. Keep playing, keep having fun, and the talent question will sort itself out. Keep track of your wins and losses, keep notes on things you learn. The slippery, hazy edge between skill and luck is what makes poker worth playing.
