Couples Playing Together, Josh, 30. Mar 2003 14:34

I live in Chicago and I host a home game once or twice a week. We play No-limit Holdem tournies, and No-limit cash games. The cash game is a minumum $50 buy-in so by the end of the nite theres a good $1,000-1,500 on the table. I have ten friends who play and two of them are married and play outa the same bankroll. My question is if anyone thinks this in unfair to the other players? Does the married couple have a slight advantage over the rest of us? Heres a scenario which i thought of that might give them an edge. I hold AJ, the married couple holds AK and AQ, the flop comes A 9 4. I come out and bet $5, the AJ calls, and the AK raises $20. THis raise right here tells the other married couple that I have a stronger hand so you fold and let me take this pot. She folds and now its heads up. The turn is a J and the rest is unrelavant. But by this style of play I end up losing money because of the AQ the married couple held folded when she should of called giving me additional money in the pot. This is just an example to illustrate my point. Please let me know what you think and if there is anything that can be done. Thanks.
Josh

Sounds like a recipe for disaster, i wouldnt let them play at the same time.

Why not suggest that she makes cakes for you all whilst he plays :-)

I agree it is a mistake to let them play together at the stakes you are playing for (i.e. for lower stakes, wouldnt matter as much). They may have a signalling system worked out that goes beyond just betting/raising (e.g. when husband puts a blue chip on top of his stack he has premium hand, which hand he/she holds the cards with etc...).

Interestingly, in Andy Bellin's book "Poker Nation" he talks about playing as a team with his wife and some of the tricks they used in either CA or LV card rooms. If I remember correctly (it's been a while since I read it) they were eventually caught in the act and some guys beat the crap out of him.

Not sure. She was apparently quite good looking and wore provocative outfits to the card room...

FIRST OF ALL, YOU SAID THAT YOU PLAY WITH FRIENDS, RIGHT?
YOU KNEW BEFORE HAND THAT THESE TWO PEOPLE WERE MARRIED. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE?
YOU EITHER HAVE TO TRUST YOUR FRIENDS, EVEN THE COUPLE, OR YOU SHOULD NOT BE HOSTING THIS GAME! IF OTHERS FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE THE WAY YOU SEEM TO FEEL, THEN HOW MUCH FUN CAN YOU POSSIBLY BE HAVING?
MOST PEOPLE HOWEVER DO NOT CHEAT AND YOU MAY BE READING INTO SOMETHING THAT REALLY DOES NOT EXIST.
REMEMBER, POKER IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN, WHETHER PLAYING FOR MONEY OR NOT! IF YOU ARE NOT HAVING FUN AND FEEL THAT THIS GAME IS NOT BEING PLAYED FAIRLY, THEN I SUGGEST YOU CANCEL YOUR HOME GAME.

First of all "WHY ARE YOU YELLING", second, I didnt accuse these people of cheating. They are my friends and we have a great time, all I was asking is if there was a slight advantage of playing together at the same table.
