Eating drinking and drugs while you play., Mr.Fox, 29. Mar 2003 07:05

I've learned alot about nutrition and in particular smart nutrients over the years. Being new to serious poker I wondered if anyone has things they do to make them sharp before a game while remaining calm. Most things that increase brain functioning are also slight uppers and in my experience that would increase tells by quite alot. try to get rid of the shakes when you'e betting and you're hopped up on gignko and caffeine and you'll know what I mean.

I always load up on caffeine when I play, but I haven't had the shakes since my earliest days. I think that in general, you're only going to produce a lot of tells until you settle into the game and if caffeine is part of your game, it shouldn't affect your expression.

As for smart drugs and the likes, I don't think you need them to play good poker. Poker is about being a robot 99% of the time and being extremely inciteful 1% of the time. When it comes time for that insight, I think that experience is much more important than raw intellect.

I like showing shakes. I'll leave it to my opponent to figure out if I'm shaking 5-6 suited and need a flop, or A-A and busting to steal his pile.

Trust me, it confuses the hell out of 'em when you work it correctly......the key is to show your 5-6, which may cost you a bit.

Shakes aren't bad, shakes are your friend!!

Thanks to my AEDs (Anti-epileptic drugs) I can't get rid of the bloody shakes. Caffeine even seems to calm me a bit (probabally psychosomatic), but when I'm playing poker, I accentuate the shakes. I twitch, and can't keep a steady hand for the life of me, mainly because I stop trying to keep steady. If I have a seizure in a card room, I stop playing for at least a few hours (post-ictal sickness makes poker impossible), but when I come back - even days later - I am weak and frail, and I can play that table image just as well as my normal image.

This pretty much keeps some of the other players viewing me as the amusing handicapped boy at the table, and not seeing me as any kind of threat. Some even seem to try to target me, betting all kinds of really crap hands into me - hands they wouldn't bet into anyone else.

Shakes = Profits

Good point, but I'm talking about the regular jitters newbies get from having a strong hand. Those shakes are difficult to fake convincingly. That's what I'm talking about. As for having a seizure at the table - hey...whatever works.

i've been playing for just three months, and my hand shakes all the time. it's not because i have a weak hand or a monster hand - it's because i'm putting money out there! i play in a weekly home game NL Omaha High. the pots can get pretty crazy, and no matter what cards are in my hand, i'm going to be shaking when i have $75 of my money in the pot.

i'm basically just nervous about playing cards, and being involved in big pots in general.

johnny.
