On-line Poker Playing Tip No. 1, Paul Stine, 27. Mar 2003 21:35

I have decided to post some on-line poker playing tips and tells, as they occur to me. I hope you find them helpful and I encourage you to discuss them.

On-line Poker Playing Tip No. 1: Keep your hand off that mouse.

Sounds simple, right? Sure. Do you do it? No...
So, you ask, why should I keep my hand off the mouse?

The answer is very simple: Keeping your hand off the mouse until it is your turn to act keeps you from making mistakes that cost you money.

Have you ever attempted to click on an action control button and, just as you are clicking the button on your mouse, the action associated with the button changes from, say, 'Call ($10) in turn' to 'Call ($20) in turn.' Consequently, you wind up making a $20 call when a $10 call would have been marginal. That is a mistake.

That isn't the only kind of mistake that involves the mouse. Are you surfing the web, checking e-mail, or even reading UPF while playing on-line? If you are doing any of these things you are not paying attention to the game. Yup, a mouse related mistake. If your hand is not on the mouse until it was your turn to act, it would be impossible to make these mistakes.

So, keep you eye on the game and you hand off that mouse. When it is your turn to act, make a conscious decision of the appropriate action, move the cursor to that action control, and execute it. Then move the cursor out of the area of the screen where the action controls are and ...
keep you hand off that mouse! (and your finger off the trigger.)

That is a *very* good piece of advice Paul. One more point. I love playing against a player (I like to play heads up freeze outs) who has pre-acted and when you limp in, he auto checks. You are pretty much guaranteed that he's holding garbage cards and had clicked on the check/fold option and you can take the pot down on most flops even if you don't have a whif of a good hand.

I HAVE BEEN PLAYING POKER PROFESSIONALLY FOR TEN YEARS NOW. I ALSO ENJOY PLAYING ON-LINE, AND I HAVE NEVER THOUGHT OF KEEPING MY HAND OFF THAT MOUSE!!
WHAT A GREAT TIP!
I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN AND DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE IT!
HOW EASY IT IS TO JUST PRESS BUTTONS!
IF YOU LOOK AT THE MOUSE AS IF THEY WERE YOUR CHIPS, THEN YOU WOULD NOT BE MAKING CALLS THAT YOU KNOW ARE NOT CORRECT.
PAUSE, THINK ABOUT IT, THEN CLICK THE MOUSE!!
I COULDN'T AGREE MORE WITH YOU, AND THANKS.

Just put it in your routine.

You click and you move. Done.

A bit discussed already, but you have a routine under brick and mortar, so why not have one here. Right?
