Could I be happy with...., TKarrde, 25. Mar 2003 09:33 | ||

| playing poker for about 4 hours once every other week?? My dilema is that I am not real close to any casinos. One is an hour away another is hour and a half. Mix in a happy marriage, three very young children, and we just built a house, and I don't have much free time. But for the past few months I have been nuts about playing hold'em. Been all over the web reading. Bought a couple books. Made a "cheat sheet" to memorize for starting cards. Created an Excel program to randomly deal 10 hands, a flop, the turn, and the river to practice what hands to play and how to play them. I have been able to make it to the poker room at the local casino boats for a total of three times in the past three months. My first time was before I had read much. Smallest table they had was a $5-$10. I lost $160 very quickly. Went back again after reading some. Only lost $40 after several hours. And that was with the dealer scooping up my pocket Aces. Talk about a kick in the gut. Guess you learn some lessons the hard way. Last time was at a different casino playing at a $2-$4 table. Much more comfortable playing for smaller stakes. Ended the evening up $80. But now I am just dying to get back. So frustrating. Like I have been practicing free throws for ever and the coach won't let me in the game. Can I be happy going every other weekend? Or should I quit now before I bust? Thanks, TK | ||

| I have a lot of important pieces of advice for you, so listen carefully please. First, you may think that you are learning fast, but experience in poker has no substitute - I guarantee you that you don't know as much as you think you know and you are unlikely to beat a casino game right now. Second, there are very few 2-4 games in B&M casinos that are beatable because the rake takes too much money out of the game. Third, when you're starting out, you really shouldn't be putting in too many hours. Fourth, you've barely cut your teeth in poker...whether you win or lose has almost nothing to do with how you are playing in the short run. If you play 20 hours a week for an entire year then you'll probably know more or less how well you are doing...three sessions is a big question mark. Fifth, if you're looking for a place to play, there are tonnes of safe places on the internet. Ultimatebet, Partypoker, Paradisepoker, and many others that have a solid reputation are just fine to take a go on. You can play very small stakes online and work on the math part of your game without having to deal with the human aspect - no need to worry about giving off tells or reading other players. I would suggest you drop 50-100 dollars from your credit card into an internet poker room and play some $0.25-$0.50 games where you can make a steady, but tiny profit just by playing good starting hands and playing very ABC. Then move up, when you've built a bit of an online roll and play some $1-$2. Then pick up Mike Caro's Book of Tells and learn a little of the human game. Then go to the casino and sit at the 5-10. And if you can only play 4 hours every second week, it's not the end of the world. There is always time to make money - poker can't be your career until it has been your hobby for a very very long time, so don't rush into it. When you're new to the world of poker you can have a lot of fun with it - tell your bad beat stories and your 'amazing' reads you pulled and just enjoy yourself. And whatever you do, stick to the low limits until you're SURE that you're beating the game - your wife and kids will thank you :) Lastly, I want to encourage you to play poker. I firmly believe that anybody with the dedication to read a few poker books and want to play well can become a winning player. Go for it...just tread softly. -Dook | ||

| Dook- Thanks for some great advice. Finally got online last night. Went to UltimateBet and sat down at a "play money" table for a couple hours. Couldn't believe how loose-aggressive it was. I hope just because it was "play money". Wanted to make sure I liked the site before I decide to play for real money. Actually did quite well. Took my $1000 up to $1800 in less than an hour at $10-$20. Then decided to see what Omaha was like (that game always kicks my butt). Won my second hand and got it up to $2400. But didn't realize it was PL and didn't get out until I was back down to $1200. Worked that back up to $1500 at the Hold 'Em table. Then for some reason I went on tilt really bad. Tired of bad beats by these guys staying in on anything, or folding to a guy rasing everything just to find out he didn't have anything plus mix in some impatience and "play money" and I was down to $700 quickly. But that said, I would like to try the cheap games if it isn't so loose. But for that kinda money it probably is. But I can probably still make a profit if I can control myself. TK | ||

| You will see that at "Play Money" tables because nothing is at stake. My advice would be don't play these tables for too long because it will get you to call in a live game when you shouldn't. Rest assured, there are a few players who play real tables similar to play table actions, but you would never see every round capped with top pair winning at the end in a real $$ game where this is common at the play tables. | ||

| What about trying to find a home game? Being as close as you are to casinos, there is probably a significant number of people who are in situations like yous, wanting to play, not wanting to drive. I would suggest you try a resouce like PokerPages.com's Forum, http://www.pokerpages.com/interactive/pokerforum/index.php scroll down to the Home Games section and browse a bit. You could even post a message saying that you are looking for a game. Of course, you should employ a certain amount of caution when entering a game you know almost nothing about. In the beginning you might have to travel a bit (but less than a casino trip) to find a game, but once you are in a game you *will* hear about other games. I looked for a game in my town for a long time and found one this way. It took a while, but now I know about a lot of different games around and can play almost any night of the week if I want to. Good luck, Paul Stine College Station, TX | ||

| Also you may try pickin up some poker software. I started out playing wilson turbo texas hold'em. I think it's a great program. You can set the limits and the players however you want. Plus it has an advisor on it that will tell you the odds for whatever hand your drawing to and give you suggestions on what your play should be. Granted it is just software and the computer can't factor in all human aspects, but I think this program is probably the best one I've seen advertised. Just a suggestion. Jeremy | ||
