| What are the chances I'm not walking into a blood filled ocean in early May? I'm only a year or so into this, the urge is there to play with the big boys, but I'm afraid I'd be watching/learning more than playing wisely. Any comments on where to avoid? | ||

Unless you are some sort of poker savant, you simply can't have had enough experience after one year to be anything but chum against the sharks, big boys, even the not so big boys. Sure, you may know the starting hands and the odds, but truly good, experienced players know what they are going to do given a hand, board and action, before it happens. You only get this from playing lots and lots and lots and lots. I mean lots. When you don't know what you are going to do, how can you be thinking about what your opponents are going to do and what they are thinking that you are thinking you are going to do. Get it? Now the good news: Go. Yeah, go for the scene, go for the spectacle, go for the bad players buffet, but don't go thinking you are going to do anything but get puree'd at the tables at anything over the limits you usually play. There are a ton of players of every level of sophistication. There are a ton of games at every level. It is a real hoot and you can never really be sure if it will be held next year. Besides that, you can always say, "Yeah, I've been to the World Series." Good luck. Paul Stine College Station, TX

Play some low limit games there and make some money at them, then watch the big boys and maybe try out a WSOP satelite or two. Maybe you'll get lucky and pull a Varkonyi (started in a satelite and won the main event), but most likely you'll get pulped. Let me put it this way: 90% of casino poker players are losers and I'm a winner - I'd say that there are about 50 levels of poker players. I'd say that the final table at WSOP has at least half the players being level 45+. I'd say that I'm about a level 3. Maybe Roy Cooke is a level 30. It's really easy to overestimate your abilities, so my advice is go, have fun, and don't get in over your head.

| I forgot to mention that I have gone before and I might even get over there this year (in the course of my work, of course.) BTW, Networld+Interop is during the third or fourth week of the Series this year. If you can get your employer to pay for your airfare, car and part of your hotel it makes it even better. | Here seems like a good place to insert one of Roys no so famous quotes. "In Las Vegas you are going to be up against some of the worlds best players in any limit you play. Luckily you are also going to be up against some of the world worst players too." on 20.
