Are you willing to sacrifice?, timmer, 16. Mar 2003 09:05

wanna get better at poker? sure every one does but not everyone is willing to sacrifice or even make a commitment to improving their level of skill.

I am writing this for those who want to increase their skills but just don’t know how to go about it .

Well, it starts with commitment and endures through sacrifice.

Sacrifice its a word heard often out side baseball but people don’t seem to really know what it truly means. So, to better our understanding of the term Ill give you an brief example.

Sacrifice is when as a kid you want to go outside and play baseball but your mother makes you study math. you stay in and study rather than sacrifice your future freedom . Soon you realize that math is a good thing and you really kind of enjoy doing that homework. Guess what. before you saw doing your math as a sacrifice before , now you
seem to enjoy it. Until the dean tells you must make all A's in your calculus class if you want to stay on the team . Then again math becomes a sacrifice.

So to become a great poker player you must always sacrifice for your art. your level of commitment to study and to serious play has to be above that of what is comfortable to you or better yet beyond that which is comfortable to your opponents. However I feel you
should exceed yourself and worry about your opponents skill as a secondary , But not unimportant concern. Along this course whenever you find your self playing or studying at a comfortable level watch out. comfortable and complacent go hand and hand and we
all know what complacency heralds don’t we ? You see comfortable aint good enough. you must sacrifice.

Now for those of you who don’t know where or what to study and or to practice Ill lay it out for you.

In the beginning get intimate with a beginners level poker book In one or two games you would like to play. Which book isn’t really that important there are many excellent ones to choose from. The key is to get intimate with it . this is your sacrifice here.

also I would recommend getting intimate with a poker based software program with the ability to do high speed simulations, I also recommend caros "tells" book & video and power poker video programs. these works will give you the edge throughout your career
if you study them intently.

study with sacrifice with this information coupled with disciplined play will make you a winner at the low limit games. Some people contend that you cant beat the lowest limit games because of the rake . although that might be true in some cases over all I feel it is
not. The play of the average player (remember the sacrifices you make will but you light years ahead of the average player) at these limit is so bad it can usually make up for the rake if you know how to take advantage of it .

Next If I decided to move up I would get ready for an increasing sacrifice. If my best opponents are willing to make a sacrifice my sacrifice must be as great and must increase. Also the commitment to my goal also must increase.

Now I would obtain the following "The theory of poker".
Roy Cooke has confessed to me that he has read TTOP over 100 times. So... you want a shot at Roy and at the game the he plays in you better make it 500 ( well.. OK - 200) I would also obtain one of the advanced series published by Sklanski and Malmuth's outfit.
At least these works will get you up to speed on what the better competition is likely doing. I feel they are class A works and to really get them into your bones will do you worlds of good at the poker table. Also I would recommend Cooke Collection the play of
the hands. It will give you a blue print on how to outfox your opponents by thinking critically about the hand , its future play, And the opponents who are playing (or not Playing ) it.

Beyond that there are many worthwhile poker/books out there for you to devour. But I sincerely believe that by obtaining these few items and engaging in a sacrificial level of study and dedication to ones best play coupled with a increasing level of experience in any
particular game *Anyone* with in moderate intelligence quotients could crush the vast majority of players with in the moderate to low limit levels.

Now the question for your head to ponder is , are you willing to sacrifice?

.... getting intimate with all of those objects (you freak!), when do you have time to play poker?

I know people have said that the 2+2 writings are screwy... or screwed them.... but I didn't know they meant LITERALLY!

I might have to give up the holy goodness of poker in protest of your lasciviousness.... I mean, this IS a moderated forum and all....

Reread your message, looking for the word "intimate", then translate with a diseased mind.
