Slim's new Book, Ashley Adams, 16. Mar 2003 02:39

I've just read the best non-strategy poker book. I don't mean to put down Holden's or Alvarez's or Spanier's or Bellin's. But Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People is by far the most compelling, interesting, funny book about the great world of poker that I've ever read -- and I've read them all. It's published by Harper Collins. Greg Dinkin co-wrote the book with Slim.
I read it on my recent trip to Vancouver and Seattle (great poker cities by the way). I got so caught up in the text that I literally almost missed my flight. I didn't hear anyof the three calls to board my flight to Seattle. When I looked up I saw the flight attendants closing the door. I had to scamper to make my FLIGHT!
What a great read. I can't wait for the movie. But who'll play Amarillo Slim as a young man? Jimmy Stewart was the only actor tall and thin enough!

Where did you play when you were in Vancouver? The Holliday Inn has a sweatheard of a 10-20 with full kill and a max $3 rake. And it's a huge aquarium of a room to boot.

Maybe it's time for Phil Hellmuth to start an acting career :)

I played at the Holiday In and found the games as you describe them. I was thinking how fantastic I was doing until I realized that the $200 I was up was really only about $120 US!

Indeed, but what a game, eh? I'd say that game is definitely beatable for at *least* 2 BB/hour.

Was Alan there? Benny?

I played there in December and found that there was always at least one whale at the table and pretty much every single player made a 1BB mistake per hand. Some of them were hilarious. I watched the following happen there:
Fish 1: How can you raise with those cards?
Fish 2: (after hitting 2 pair from a raise on 46o) Well I can't play cards like these unless I raise to thin the field.
Fish 1: You lucky bastard. (His overcards of TJ hit on the river...but he cold called with TJo)

My smile was starting to hurt by that point.
