Wins/Losses as a Bankroll % ?, spartan51, 12. Mar 2003 08:23

Just curious does anyone use a method to limit their losses or cap their winnings for any one session as a percentage of their bankroll, irregardless of what the play is like at the table ? For example, assuming a $ 1,000. bankroll, playing $2/$4 holdem, would it be a good idea to limit losses to say 10 % ($ 100)
and cap winnings at 15-20%($ 150-200)? Would very much appreciate your input . I believe if I put this practice into place my average win rate per hour would go up.

This is only a good idea if you have a high propensity to go on tilt when you are winning/losing a lot in a given session. Life is one big session and there is no point in leaving a profitable table unless you have a good reason (sleepy, need to go to work, tilting, etc). You're going to spend more time waiting for tables and driving to the casino if you cut off your sessions like this and you're also going to spend more time getting to know the players and less time capitalizing on what you have learned.

I failed to mention this is assuming online play, but would be interested for B & M games as well. Thanks.

General consensus is that artificial limits are bogus. I say do what works for you. I can tell you what works for me. Time played.

When I was playing steadily (every day) I kept detailed records, including time played. I noticed that my peak wins were right between two and a half and three hours in the casino and my losses and break evens were 4-6 hour sessions. I surmised this had more to do with attention span than anything else.

Since then, in casino's, I stay a max of 3 hours and sometimes come back for a second session in the evening. Losses are rarer and more managable and I tend to walk with more on average than I did before. I will however, stay longer if the situation is too good to pass up. I make a real effort to get up and walk around to stay focused. Your play and your opponents should be the bottom line in staying in the game. Experiment and find out what works for you. - Nathaniel Brous
