HELP! Psyc problem, Carl Heydman, 9. Mar 2003 11:24

| According to the "Psycology of Poker", if you make stupid plays, and I'm paraphrasing here, over and over again, you should see a phsycotheripist to help you discover why. Tell that to a counselor! Well none of the ones I have been to wants to help me make a profit, their more concern about my life, which is boring becuase I continue making this one stupid mistake in poker!!!! Sorry. Thanks for letting me vent. The question. How can I learn the disipline needed to NOT play marginal hands or call raises from those who don't bluff very often when I am way ahead in the money from where I started. This is a bigger problem in tourneys. I do really well in the beginning playing tight but when I become in the top 5 player with money, I start to play a little looser. It works if the players are the same becuase I control the table, but in money games players come and go and in tourneys we all get switched around. Does anyone else have this problem? Maybe a support group eigh? If I haven't confused you, please help me out. Thank you in advance. | ||

| Have you read, "Zen and the Art of Poker," by L.W.Phillips? If not, go get it (around $12). There is a section that covers the reasons people play poker. For pure profit is rarely the true reason why most of us play. When a player honestly comes to terms with the true reasons he/she plays, then it is much easier to make necessary adjustments to become a better player. To this day, I still struggle with myself (read: my own worst enemy on the table), but am a much improved player due to self analysis. - Nathaniel Brous | ||

Read Zen...also known as "the tilt book" ... one of the first things it talks about is punishing your opponents with your folds. Using the fold as an offensive money making weapon. It really helps me when I'm running cold to think about each of my folds as an attack on the loose players.

| The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. As with most habits, breaking the habit of playing marginal hands begins with the first time you reject playing a marginal hand (and muck it instead. This includes that "cheap" marginal hand in the blind.) The first one is the toughest, after that mucking marginal hands becomes easier and easier. Paul Stine College Station, TX | ||

| Thanks for the responsive. Punishing a loose player with folds....humm, I never thought of that. I always wish to play back at them. I will try and think, "In your face" when I fold. Well I'd probably think of something else but my mom may read this. jk I will buy the "tilt book too" Carl | ||

GRIN! My friend in Providence once clarrified the difference between American "Ay" and Canadian "Eh". Canadians might say, "Grab a beer for me, eh?" while Americans say, "Ay! Grab me a beer!"
