Did I misplay this?, Schuster, 6. Mar 2003 13:09

Hey folks, been reading these for a little while now, first time posting... great information.

I got into poker over the summer and only recently started playing online at the low limit ($0.50/1) hold'em tables. I held 10 J offsuit on the button. 3 callers in front of me, I called, and the BB checked so we had 5 going into the flop. Flop was 7c 9d Qd. It was checked around to me and I bet hoping to see the river for free if I didn't make my straight. One folded, 3 called. Turn was another Q. Again checked around to me. I check and see what's left for free. Last card comes Ad. Again checked around to me, and I decide to make a bluff at it. I bet, first 2 fold, the third guy thinks a minute, and decides to call me. Shows a pair of deuces.

First thing, I would never figure someone to call my bet on the flop with 2 callers in front of him and him holding deuces. Am I incorrect?

Second, did I misplay the hand as a whole anywhere? I felt my read was pretty solid that others weren't holding much. Thanks in advance!

you played the hand fine until the end. At the low limits, alot of people will call you down with ANYTHING. Alot of these players can't stand the thought that they might get bluffed off a hand they would have won, so it is generally really hard to win with a true bluff.

I would only bluff timid players at that table.

Your bluff might have worked at 20/40, but rarely at .50/1.

I think you played the hand well. If you were playing in a B&M casino I would guess that you were wearing your tells on your sleeve, but it sounds, under the circumstances, that you were just playing in a fish tank. When you're in a situation like that, don't bluff as they don't pay off...win with your good hands and fold your crap. Playing ABC is the way to beat loose passive tables.

Given the texture of this game, its entirely likely that noone is drawing to a flush. A bet from last position on the flop is easy. Seeing as how these players want to run you down to the river and will call, I think the bet on the turn was quality just in terms of money odds. However, on the river, I'd had given up with betting; the same reason you bet on the turn is exactly why you probably don't want to push the river, they will be calling with very poor holdings. On the flip side, if you hit a jack or ten rather than making your straight, I'd imagine that you could easily make a quality value bet on the river since noone represented strength on the turn. You had a number of solid outs on the turn, likely 14, but you missed on the river and a bluff has -EV in my opinion.
