How tight do winning players play, glenda yasui, 5. Mar 2003 02:54

Can someone please explain:

I have just logged some 14500 hand at low limits online. My win percentage for that time was 3.5%. Based basically on book play I have found that not enough premium hands are dealt and won to even cover the cost of the blinds.

Last 7 sessions (typical):

Hands Won % Won/Lost(BB)
1) 292 8 2.7 10
2) 80 3 3.8 -6
3) 41 0 0.0 -4
4) 99 3 3.0 -2
5) 33 1 3.0 -6
6) 63 2 3.2 -2
7) 398 11 2.8 4

In session 1 I went 135 hands without a win. In session 7 I went a 140 hands without a win and out of 398 hands I won one hand with pocket pairs. Had QQ,QQ,TT,99,88,QQ,TT that were played and lost.

On the other hand the only winners I have seen at these tables played just the opposite what is described as tight aggressive play. Playing all connectors, suited, and face cards irregardless of position, raises, or number of players in the pot.

What am I missing here???

Hi Glenda

I do not know what book you are using, but if the book has a reasonable hand selection strategy then your p[roblem might lie elsewhere such as play of hands, value betting, bluffing strategies, calling strategies.

Poker is NOT all about hands selection. Many other skills and strategies need to be developed.

Glenda- I agree with Roy. From your post, it appears that you are playing the right kinds of hands. However, HOW you play them can be equally or more important than what they are. You need to learn to recognize situations and play accordingly.

One thing I have learned is that tight play alone will make you a loser in the long run due to the blinds lost and the rake. It is smart, tight, aggressive play that will turn you into a winner.

Keep at it.
