blinds and dead players, XJ, 4. Mar 2003 11:26

| I play on a site where the way blinds and dead players are handled is bugging me a bit, and I'm wondering if there are any kind of standards or common rules (or if any could be suggested) for play when : 1) There are a significant number of disconnected players 2) A player has just gone out who would have affected the position of the blinds. In case 1, if there are 3 or more players disconnected, but placing blinds, the players in position right before these players have the huge advantage of being able to capture the blinds if all other players have folded preflop. With a single raise the disconnected players automatically fold. This means you can have a significant advantage if you happen to be on a table with more disconnected players. In case 2, on most sites (in my experience) a player who has gone out on the previous hand will be 'preserved' as far as blind position goes, causing a dead button, dead SB or BB. On this site, the blinds are placed completely discounting dead players from the previous hand. This regularly causes people to miss one, or if you're very lucky, two blinds. Don't really know what can be done about 1, but IMO it's clear that the blind position in 2 should take into account dead players from the previous round - *is* this just down to the preference of the software developer? | ||

Generally speaking (and at most B&M casinos) it should work thusly: The big blind moves, not the puck, so a player cannot miss his big blind because of somebody else leaving the table. If a player is away from the table for his big then he cannot play again until he is in the cutoff and then he must post a big blind and surrender a small blind. A player who misses only the small blind must surrender the small blind when he comes back in. As for the game becomming shorthanded when somebody is away, yes it makes it easier to steal, but by the same token the other players should be looser now that the table is shorthanded and make it harder to steal successfully.
