Why am I losing?, David A, 1. Mar 2003 15:34

Maybe a silly topic, but please take your time and read my question.
I also beg the reader to pardon my english, the reason, I´m young and swedish....

I´ll give you som background facts.
I learned to play poker a year ago, when a couple of friends of mine hosted a small tournament. I went out last. But got the taste for it.

After that we played every week and I studied the game in books and on the internet.
It took me about a month or two to become a frequent winner in those games. These guys didn´t really know what they were doing.

At that time, me and my poker interested friend met a guy on the bus and he asked us to join him for their regular game. We did and we both lost.

We won money from our friends and lost them with our new ones.

Then I discovered Pokerpages and Cardplayer on the internet and I played in the freeroll tournaments of Pokerpages.

This made me a winner in both of the live games.
I was confident and thought that I could win some more online.
This was about three months ago.

I played one or two hours daily at Ladbrokes and I won about $100 a week.
I mostly play low limit holdem, one table tournaments and low limit heads up. Only holdem.

After these two succesful months I started losing, and lost $600 in one month. I keep track on my games and I didn´t win a single day that month.

My question to you is, what should I do? Have this happened to you?

Thanks. /David

Could be a bad run of cards, but I suggest a good friend with poker skills watch you play. Maybe you are being "read" at the casino and need to work on that. This would explain the difference between your online wins and casino losses. Just a guess and better players here will give you better advice, I am sure. gl.

I also win live and lose online. In my case, it is because I play well with humans. I've got a very good read and as such I am a loose agressive player. Online, I can't tell that somebody has a great hand by a shaking hand or a disinterested look to the TV in the corner, nor can I tell that he's bluffing by a stare down or a bet out of turn. Without the human element, I am a bad bad poker player and good online players punish me for it.

Also, there is a lot of talent online. I play at a B&M casino where the fish are plentiful and you can tell how bad they are just by looking at them.

I think it is likely that the style of play is different between the games in which you win and those in which you loose. I base this on my own experience.

Personally, I do badly in aggressive games (tight or loose). I believe it is because I have leaks in my game (probably on the flop and turn), that aggressive players punish me for but that passive players do not (my current project is to identify and fix those).

An important point is that it is not just good aggressive players who I do badly against. It is all aggressive players. They do not even need to be winning. One time there were two very aggressive players who each lost two or three racks in the time that it took me to loose one. Nevertheless, I believe that it was their influence on the game and on my play that was a big factor in my loosing.

I consistently beat passive games but usually loose in aggressive games.

You might have run into a style of play that you do badly against. Compare the games that you do well in to those that you do not and look for differences. Also consider your own style of play. Does it change? If so why? This is an opportunity for you to learn something about your own style of poker and how effective it is against different types of opponent. You might also find some leaks in your game. If you can fix them you will become a better player against all types of opponent.
