| This following hand occured in the very beginning of a tournament. A single table tounament, everyone starts with 10k, blinds start at $25-50. I'm on the button, everyone folds to me. I look down at AKo and make it $500 to go. The small blind calls $500 and the BB folds. The flop is A 7 3 rainbow. The small blind goes all-in. Without knowing anthing about this player becuase it is the beginning of the tourney, what do you do? Thinking that she might have the same hand as me, I was seriously considering calling, but ended up folding and just ate the $500 loss. Would appreciate any feedback. | ||

My first thought would have been to call too, but as I think about it, you have to put her on 2 pair at least. That early on, who would risk their stack with anything less than AK? So, either you are splitting up your $$ again with no gain, or you lose right away. Good fold.

It's a craptacular place to be, being put all-in with top pair top kicker, but your hand is not a monster. You're right that she probably wouldn't put you all in unless she had at least the same hand and you haven't invested that much in it yet, so I think you're right to release.

| Good fold. Too early....Not that it would have changed anything in this case....but why come out so strong...just my opinion but I would have raised 1 or 2 hundred max so early on | ||

| Did you get to see what she had? My guess is she had a set and you were right to fold, although it must've been painful. | ||

| Yeah, she showed me AK suited. Had the same hand, but even when she showed me my first thought was it was only $500 I lost. | ||

| I think you raised too much. You looked like you were trying to steal the blinds by overbetting, and got played back. If you raise something like 150 instead of 500 there's less in the pot for a player in the blinds to make a move on. | ||

| Your answer addresses (for me) a "real question" that I will post separately (Subject: AMOUNTS TO RAISE) because most beginners are clueless on the right amount to bet to get a certain result. This means I am clueless and would sure like to know some general rules of thumb for raising in a game where you have a raising hand. I did not consider the amount raised when I first read Josh's subject, and it may well be the key to his question. thanks. | ||

| 500 here is much more than an ordinary double or triple the blinds type bring in raise. When you overbet the pot especially from a steal position, what you invite is a smooth call from many hands which would ordinarily reraise. That makes it tougher to have a feel for where you are after the flop. You also make the pot large enough for a player in the blinds to make just the sort of move you don't want to see (lead bet all-in) unless you flop maximum. | ||
