Checkraising with second pair, TOM WAGGONER, 25. Feb 2003 00:40

This was a loose ten handed 10-20 with 30 on the end game. I was in the BB with K9 of spades. There was three limpers and the button raised. The SB folded, I called and the limpers all called. The flop was J97 with two clubs. It was checked around to the button who bet, and I checkraised, and two of the limpers called two cold, one folded and the button called. the turn was a red deuce, and I led out. One limper called, one folded and the button called. The river was the three of spades, and we all checked. My pair of nines won. My question, is was this a good play checkraising the flop with second pair and overcard kicker, and also, should I have bet the river for value.

I think the checkraise is a good play if the button will bet his position wihtout needing a solid hand. A lot of times you'll isolate him with the best hand. This flop was definitely a drawing flop, so if scary cards come, it's best to cut your loses with a check fold. I wouldn't bet the river for value. You made your money off charging people for their draws, not because it was made hand over made hand.

This is a dangerous bluff...I think you played it well, but I would say that it is the sort of move I would pull only if my reads for that table were spot on. *DEFINITELY* you shouldn't bet the river there. It falls into the class of bets that only get called when you are beaten. Is somebody going to call the river with a hand worse than yours? Why would they?

I'd be concerned that the jack on the flop helped someone. Particularly with pre-flop limpers, and two players calling two bets cold to your checkraise. I don't think I would bet the river, but I might be giving consideration to another checkraise against the right opponents.
