The advantage of being a young player, be it poker, chess, or any competitive game, is that you are learning free of preconceptions. Given a good learning structure, and practice, you get better, ... fast. The "good learning structure" avoids misconceptions. By good learning structure I mean a few very strong players to bounce ideas off, a challenging playing environment with 50% strong players & 50% fishies, and same-age peers that are in the game (both worse or better is ok for peers, it is participation that counts). Young players do not have to "unlearn" incorrect play that some adult players have gotten over time. Also, if someone corrects a younger player, there is (in theory ...) a better chance they will modify their playing behavior in the long term. Older players resist change, even if the change is beneficial.

Ok, that said, there are adults that understand this and get better fast too, but that has more to do with the amount of objectivity they bring to the learning process.

Like most games (I am thinking chess and poker here ...) players reach a plateau of play that they need to be able to break out of to improve. This breakout is not easy and usually involves unlearning some playing behaviours. This is not easy for most people of any age but crucial to chess improvement and I suspect is well paralleled in poker.

I think that emotional control is a big factor for younger poker players to work on, and that is a question of temperment.

A little long and I hope that helps you. gl.

I think back in the old days, age and experience where just about a necessity in poker, unless you were a savant like stuey. These days there is so much information out there for young players that books, internet forums, and poker software are substituting for the basic growing pains. Just check my user name to figure out which one I am.

I think the younger players have somewhat an edge from being sharper minded, that is if they don't waste away in drugs and booze. I think the older peoples edge comes in the form of being wiser, and taking advantage of those wanna-be's who waste away. I also think that good discipline comes with age, giving the older people a better chance at long term success.

Skill surely does NOT come with age. Getting older isn't an asset at poker in any regard. Skill MAY come with experience. But the exeperience alone is irrelevant if the player isn't thoughtful. Players today -- because of faster paced, more readily accessible poker on the Internet -- can often get poker playing experience at a much faster rate than players of even a decade or two ago. Similarly, playres today have access to much, much, much more information about poker with which to apply what they have observed at the table or virtual table. For experience to help the player must be thoughtful, observant, and willing to make changes in his game to apply what he has observed and learned.

I find that most young players fall into the "dedicated newbie" pattern. They play very ABC and can beat the lowest limit spread, but are in real trouble if they face good players. By the same token, the giant fish are usually older, though they tend to come in all sorts. I'm generally not greatly afraid of any players I meet under the age of about 25.
