Roy, especially, should check out the RGP thread "The Truth About Limit Poker"... since you were mentioned in it as a source of information.

Do any regulars (i.e long-term players) here think that big bet, low-cap poker would have been better for the development of poker over the past few decades, rather than limit poker?

Or was that post, as someone else postulated, simply a big-bet player trying to take advantage?

Hi

I did not see where I was mentioned as a source....I do not think that poker would be much better off if it was all big bet poker at all.

The poster seems to operate from the premise that the object of poker is to get the money into the hands of the best player.....I think poker should be an enjoyable game for the masses.

Shawn Nelson, specifically (message 23 in the thread)- sorry, should have been more specific. Did you say something similar to the following?

"The response I was hoping to see was geared towards the one "negative" associated with his otherwise wonderful idea. I too, had the same idea a year ago or so. I asked Roy Cooke why the pot limit and no limit games spread at Planet Poker were so small, with nothing "medium" or "large" to choose from.
This in a nutshell is what he told me, Shawn, if we spread those games with limits high enough to make a "difference" the thieves would flock to the games, and we would have NO way to PROTECT the players. In other words, limit poker online is protectable from the vast majority of collusion, at pot and no limit the technology hasn't caught up yet with the means available to the "cheaters". Roy also told me that if the games were spread higher that HE would NOT play either."

Indeed. As much as I would like to be playing poker with the expected outcomes of a good chess player (as in I win almost all the time against inferior players), the fact of the matter is this: without bad players, there is nobody to pay for the good players. Without the good players, the pros have nobody to gobble up. Ours is a predatory game and if you're not a lion then you're a gazelle. It's important for fish to win sometimes and it is important that they think they are beating the game when they are not...this is why hold'em is so much better for a casino to spread than Omaha. It allows to poor players to lose their money more slowly to the good players and thus gets them to keep playing and to come back.

I also look at things the following way: If I'm playing at a table with a $5 (CDN) session fee every half hour, then I need one player sitting at the table taking one Borden out of his pocket every hour. *Then* I need to be able to beat the remaining players. Limit poker is great in that the worst players will still lose quickly while those who lose slowly think they are masters of the table against the fish.

Hi, Easy E --

It is indisputably true that limit poker is more comfortable for casual players than no-limit poker. Therefore, if you want to get people through the gate and into the arena, you need to spread plenty of limit games.

I fully realize that no-limit is preferred by many Europeans (and I often prefer it myself), but those are mainly experienced players.

Beyond the fact that no-limit poker is too intense and unnerving for the tastes of players seeking to enjoy the game in comfort, it can also be quite tedious. That's because to play correctly (at least at a full-handed table), you need to be more patient than in limit poker.
