im just looking for peoples thoughts on this: in the begining to middle parts of a tournament what do think about calling an all-in that will put you all-in, preflop with an average stack with a good hand, persay aces or kings? is this something you would jump at or save your chips for a better situation?

The problem with the early parts of a tournament, you have a "large population of yahoos" that will go all in against you with something obscene like 86o or just a weaker hand and get lucky. Why be a target and go all-in right from the getgo? I would really like to hear what other people have to say about this. Is slowplaying AA or KK in the early phases of a tournament a better strategy to avoid maniacs and their freak flops. Maybe the yahoo is me and the "right" thing to do is go all-in if you have AK, but I remember the first round of a wsop satellite, some guy went all-in with AK and I had AA. He was gone. If he had raised, and I reraised, he would at least have had the option of thinking.

What exactly would you call a better hand?

better hand- better odds- better situation. throwing your money once youve seen some cards and your hand is much more likley to hold up.

If I were on the big blind with AA and somebody went all in with the situation you described and everyone else folded, I'd take my chances heads up with AA versus one opponent any time. Odds are he might have KK, QQ, JJ, AK suited, AQ suited, or AJ suited. In this situation you have enough of an advantage to warrant the risk, and if you're playing in a No Limit Holdem tourney, you need a high risk tolerance to begin with. Let's put it another way, if he knew somebody else in the hand had an AA behind him, do you really think he'd go all in pre-flop? I doubt it. However if he goes all in and 2 others go all-in also, I'd have to reconsider playing the AA if it sent me all in as well. Odds are some of the other players have the other two aces, and pocket 10s or pocket 9s could be more likely to flop a set and you'll have no help coming. You might also be up against at least one player with a versatile hand like 10-J suited which could make a flush and has maximum stretch for straights as well.

Go all in. Unless you have KK and have a reason to believe that the bettor has AA, then go all in. You've got to increase your stacksize at some point and you're a giant favourite. Nobody ever won a poker tournament without taking a risk (and sitting on your ass is risking death by blinding). Better somebody else puts you all in that you put yourself all in, IMHO. If you lose to a "yahoo" then smile to yourself and hope the same thing happens in the next tourney. You don't need to win every tournament to be a wildly successful tournament player.
