Keep a "Play Book"?, flintsword, 21. Feb 2003 19:25 | ||

| Do poker players keep a "Play Book" to record key flops, particular problems, detailed play ideas, etc? If yes, can you describe what it looks like and the kinds of plays you would put in it. Thanks for any input here on what (I suspect) is a very elementary question. | ||

| Pokerschoolonline.com has a program called CPA. I used it for the trial period, just enough to get the formulas and create a spreadsheet, (I'm cheap but it is a very good program to buy), then I keep short notes on how I played, how I felt, (relaxed or intense), whether it was a friendly or confrontational mood. Online I take a screen shot of the table and then right comments about the players by their icon. In live games it's more difficult because I have a problem remembering peoples name so I describe them, kind of watch or a ring is better then clothing. Basically, anything that might give you a slight edge is what you want. I hope this was of help. | ||

| Thanks Carl, I appreciate the input. Your idea of a screen shot is brilliant and I can see it being useful during a major online tournament for taking notes on players. What about a journal for specific plays or commentary from a column on poker you read? Do you keep a running notebook? | ||

| Yes, I keep all coments on a spread sheet and always read anything on poker with a highlighter in my hand a,d keep impotant pionts on 3x5 when I play. The 3x5s help me mostly when I go on tilt. One card tells me if I have been in three major pots to the river, "PLAY ANOTHER TIME!" | ||

| Some good ideas. Key points on 3x5 cards makes it portable and learning by repetition is a time-proven method to enforce correct answers, ... in this case correct play through discipline. I'll add it to my repertoire. A spreadsheet of information sounds intriguing. You must sort information by categories. What are your categories that you break down information for your spreadsheet, if you do not mind my asking you to list them? Do you date each entry? Thanks for taking the time to answer my question! gl. | ||

| I sometimes keep track of every card I receive in Hold 'em. This tells me if my cards are running above or below normal and whether that has affected my win/loss. In other words, if my cards are running low (average should be an 8) and I'm winning, perhaps my play is good. But if my cards are running high and I'm losing, perhaps my play could be better. Either way, I try not to blame the cards. | ||

| That is an interesting idea I haven't heard yet, thanks. Do you keep any kind of journal on plays, interesting points from poker articles, or odds calculations? If you do, I'd be interested in the format you use (virtual or dead trees)? | ||
