My opponent: great play, or not?, CapnD, 18. Feb 2003 07:20 | ||

| 15/30 hold'em, I have QQ in middle position. Folded to guy on my immediate right (GOMIR)who raises. I 3-bet, fish on my left cold calls 3, original raiser calls. 3 handed, we see the flop of AK5 rainbow. Checked to me, I bet, fish calls, and GOMIR check-raises. I fold, fish calls. GOMIR bets the turn (blank), fish calls. GOMIR bets the river (a Q), fish folds. GOMIR shows 22. I made an easy fold, even though it looks like I had the best hand. If we would have been heads-up, I would have called GOMIR down. The fish in between won GOMIR the pot. Did GOMIR make a great play on the flop, or did he play like a fish and get lucky? | ||

| If you're in middle position and someone on your left open raises with pocket deuces, then he's a sucker even if this is the tightest 15-30 game imaginable. Then he checkraises a high flop with nothing against you and a player behind you who not only called three bets cold before the flop, but called your bet with an AK board. No, this guy just got real lucky that you or the other player didn't have an ace. Would you even think this was a great move if the queen didn't hit on the river? He has to find both of you with pocket pairs for the move to have a reasonable chance of being successful (other than catching a third deuce). My guess is that he has maybe one chance in six of getting you both to muck. You try representing an ace to a three bettor and cold caller, and you'll be buying another rack soon enough. Because he showed his uncalled hand, I think he decided to outplay both of you the moment he picked up his cards. He's not satisfied with the pot, he has to get the advertising value as well. | ||

| Whether this is a good move or not has nothing to do with what the turn and river cards were. I am not wondering if my play was good, I think I made a good laydown no matter what the results. I was just wondering about my opponents play. As far as the pre-flop raise with 22, there are many good post-flop players that play to many hands pre-flop. I'm wondering how much my opponent was thinking. Since the flop had an Ace and a King on it, the odds are I was 3-betting with something like 88-QQ. And if he knows the fish would raise the flop with an Ace, then he could have thought all this out and made the raise based on his read. Or, he could have just been thinking "hey, wouldn't it be cool if I bluffed everybody out with 22 and then showed it?" >Would > you even think this was a great move if the queen didn't hit on the river? | ||

| I think the clue here is that he showed it anyway. I doubt he thought much beyond trying to just outplay you both that hand. I think it's a reasonable move with one big card, preferably the ace. But you had a weak player in last position on the flop who could just be calling all the way with a weak suited ace. He should not expect that sort of opponent to play back with aces. I suspect he had something like KJs and did get outplayed this time. You played it right though, I don't see continuing any further after the checkraise with someone behind you who called three cold before the flop. | ||

| Very dangerous guy, that Gomar, to fool around like that in $15/30 with three over cards. makes him a fish worth watching. You Know his play was wrong and yours was correct You just need to bide your time/ He'll pay you off big time | ||
