Super/System, Jellyroll, Caro Question?, Nathaniel Brous, 13. Feb 2003 21:36

During an unwelcomed stay at a hospital a few days ago, I had the opportunity to re-read Super/System and again was stymied by a bit of the language. The term, "Jellyroll," was used several times throughout the book. I am guessing it is a piece of American venacular that has slipped out of usage. The net research I have done has uncovered many slang uses for the word, none of which fit well with poker. I took it to mean, "something that is good that you don't really think about." I can't find a poker glossary that contains it. Is anyone fairly certain they know what Doyle meant? On a related topic, Mike did you ever do the SS update thing? My only pet peeve was the Texas "turned(flopped)" vs the turn(fourth comm. card). It kept catching me, which interrupted smooth reading. - Nathaniel

Hi, Nathaniel --

Sorry to hear about your stay in the hospital, but at least you picked from the "recommended reading" list. :-)

I don't think "jellyroll" ever had any special significance in poker. I think Doyle used it in Super/System mostly as a generic saying that could apply to many good things.

"Life's just a jellyroll," would mean that life is good. I assume Doyle had a particular fondness at that time for eating jellyrolls, but that's just a guess.

Straight Flushes,
Mike Caro
