what would you do?, Boe Simmons, 11. Feb 2003 11:46

I was recently playing in a no limit 120 dollar buy in tournament in Jackpot Nevada. We were down to 12 players left. I had built my chips up to approximately 6,000. The final table was 10. The blinds were 300 and 500. I was dealt AK of spades and made a moderate raise of 1,000 dollars. I was second to act. There were only 6 players at the table. The player to my left (a solid player) re-raised me 2,000. He was the chip leader at the table. Everyone folded. I put him on a pocket pair. I thought he would have gone all in with aces or kings. So after a long deliberation I went all in. He called me with kings. An ace did not fall and I was out of the tourny. Would you have played it the same way? What are the odds of my hand against a pocket Pair? This is the hand that keeps me awake at night. Thank you in advance for helping me with this conundrum.

I once had the identicle thing happen to me in a tournament where I was on the other end of it. I had KK and went all in with AKo by reraising and then calling all in. He naturally spiked two aces on the flop, but he was dominated and it was a fluke.

When you've got AK it does greatly reduce the chances of somebody having AA or KK, but when somebody reraises an early position raise, they are either terrible or they have a premium hand. If they are at the final table, then they are not terrible. I've folded AK in nolimit tournaments a number of times preflop.

For starters, let's say that he has QQ, it's a coin flip...suitedness means little. Why go all in for a coin flip? Fold your cards and play hands that you know you will win. You're basically somewhere between having a ~50% chance of winning and being badly dominated and left to wallow in a 3-outer or worse.

At that late stage of the tournament and with a stack of that size, I would definitely muck those cards. You're big enough not to have to say "double up or get up," so sit on your hands and wait until you have AA or KK. Making the innitial raise was fine, but you have to release if a non maniac comes over the top.

My $0.02

I was in exactly the opposite situation recently where I raised with KK from EP and it was folded to the button where a solid player with AK raised me, I reraised all-in. He got lucky and caught the ace on the flop, but I think that KK's are the favorite, since AK has to get help from the flop and the KK's have two of the cards that would help AK.

You didn't say how close to the money you were. If they pay the whole final table ten places, then you should wait until two other players are gone with your stack in no immediate danger. If they pay say just six places, then it would depend on how much below average your stack is to both tables. I might have smooth called the blind before the flop with the intention of reraising all-in if I thought that 6000 wasn't going to be enough to make it past the bubble.
