pairs under the gun, sar2143, 7. Feb 2003 12:14 | ||

| Anyone have any advice on playing pairs under the gun? I have been getting dealt a lot of them lately and am unsure how to play. I know to raise with AA and KK. But what pairs should I call with? and what pairs should I fold? Consider the game to be low-limit and relatively loose. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve | ||

| Most books suggest raising with 10 and above and calling down to 77, depending on the game. If there are alot callers when you raise, i raise with Js or better. If there is alot raising i'll call with 9s or better. mark | ||

| Well the general rule is that small pairs and suited connectors play well in multiway pots. But as with all generalizations, you need to know how your opponents play. Remember if the game is passive but loose, you will be getting good pot odds, as well as implied odds. So you can probably stand to call with more pairs than you normally would. (I would suggest you could call with pairs as low as 88). In contrast, in tight and aggressive (the suggested manner of play) you are not getting very good odds (so you should dump the lower pairs). However, I would be inclined to raise with MORE pairs then in the first case. In the first case I would probably only raise with AA and KK. (notice there are more players in, in the first case, so you are getting better odds, but there is a higher chance you will be outdrawn). Pairs from QQ to 88 I would just call with (in the first case ). But in the case of tight aggressive, I would be more inclined to raise with pocket pairs as low as TT, because notice that you are no longer getting really great odds. And because your opponents are more apt to fold, your raise with these hands is more valuable in this situation than in a loose passive game. HOWEVER, generalizing a game to be passive/aggressive and tight/loose is dangerous. Firstly, because you may mis-diagnose the table (especially common in beginners such as myself). Secondly, the table is dynamic, it can change to tight aggressive from loose passive pretty quickly. And finally, the table is made up of different styles, some players may be passive loose while others are tight aggressive (although most of the time players tend to follow the table). So what I am trying to say is don't get too excited about labeling a table. I would focus much more on each player and try and guess what kind of player they are. This will dictate how you should play in each situation. I truly believe the most important thing is to know your opponents and to know them well. Anyway, I hope this helped a bit. Good luck, Ben | ||

| Hi If the game is loose AND passive I would call with ALL wired pairs up front. If the game is aggressive I would lean towards folding the smaller pairs 22-55. Roy Cooke on 7. | The type of game will dictate your approach but if like you said its loose and passive (like the games i play in N. Cal) ANY pair is usually good upfront.Another thing I notice is once one person limps everyone seems to follow! Raise with the usual suspects JJ-AA limp with the rest. good luck aragorn_ii | ||

| I completely disagree with The Fish on this one and I go with what Roy has to say. In a loose and passive game (ie the 5-10 at Brantford that I am so fond of) you have little chance of a raise and expect lots of limpers. You also have a good chance of lots of cold callers if there is a raise. So you should be able to see the flop with good pot odds. Then you can just follow the no set = no bet rule for small pockets. I would only deviate from this if there are a ricockulous number of people with a raise preflop and you think you can get away with calling one bet without a reraise on the flop. The idea here is that you may actually have pot odds to hit your silly 2-outer...though I would be very cautious about this one as it can kill you if you hit and somebody else is better anyway. As for when to raise, if the table is totally passive then I would raise JJ or better...maybe even TT. With these bigger pairs, you're trying to limit the field. Yes, AA is better than any other hand out there, but if you allow too many people in, then it'll have a much higher chance of being fished out on. Essentially, raise the hands that you think can stand up on their own to elliminate competition and call the hands that need to make a set to bring in more money. As soon as the table gets tight and or agressive, all this goes out the window. A tight table won't pay you enough to try your draw with a small pair and an agressive table will be a lot harder to exact implied money from if you do make your set. But if you're trying to make money at poker, you shouldn't be playing at tight or agressive tables unless you are a total expert. My $0.02. -Doooook | ||
