| I'm curious. When your a winning player and in extreme cases you've won enough to fund your life etc. What makes you know when to stop moving up the limits. Is it a purely emotional issue or is it more to do with playing style. For the real pro's that constantly beat the mid limit games, what stops them from capatilizing some of the income and going to play in the bigger games? I'm a mere nickel and dime player, but have managed to turn an outlay of about 700 into 3K. I'm now venturing into 5/10 limits but my comoftable level is still at 3/6. I'm curious what thought processes players go through to know when they should cap their bankroll and start drawing on their winnings. Cheers HH | ||

| Hi Harry I think a lot of factors go into this equation, personel, financial and your ability. Handicapping your game realistically is probably the most important factor. Accepting how the swings of a given limit will affect your life personally, emotionly and financially is also very imprortant. Take shots and see how it goes.....If you have what it takes you will make it....going to slow can only be a small error...going to fast can be a disaster. Roy Cooke > I'm curious. | i usually 'take a shot' when i have 150 big bets or so of the target limit. so i feel like i can take a shot at 10-20 when i have $3000, at 20-40 when i have $6000, and so on. my experience and records suggest to me that my risk of ruin at 4-8 is almost zero at about $1500 bankroll, so that's the minimum i will allow my bankroll to get before stepping back down (i've had to do it twice...10-20 is a hard limit to beat in my area, because it's the biggest public limit regularly spread). note that to have a solid chance of making it at a bigger limit, you need to have 300 big bets or even more...but you can take a shot on much less. if the games are good enough, you play well, and you don't get unlucky, you'll make enough cash to stay at the higher limits. unless you want to go broke, never view higher limits as a matter of ego....to me, the limits i play at are a matter of practicality. the bigger the limit, the more money i can make *if i beat the game*. but if i can't beat the game, i'll lose all my money eventually no matter how well bankrolled i am. | ||

If you've taken everything into account in terms of having enough of a roll and all that, then there is the simple practical matter of expected value. There's no reason to beat the 20-40 for .5 BB/hr when you can beat the 10-20 for 1 BB/hr or the 5-10 for 2 BB/hr. The higher the limit, the bigger the swings, so don't move up unless you're sure that you're making a relatively significant $/hr increase. Personally, I prefer the 10-20 over the 5-10, even though I think my win rate is about the same in both (1 bb/hr vs. 2 bb/hr), simply because I still learn when playing the 10-20 and I want to eventually move up to the 20-40 and 50-100. When I play the 10-20, I am afforded the opportunity to pull some clever moves and make the odd uber-read to save a big bet here, make a big bet there. Playing the 5-10 (at my local casino where it is uberfishy) is most proffitable when played uncreatively. I can't stand to be stagnant and sit there hour after hour playing ABC and seeing river after river with 4 hands shown. So I guess I would say, stop moving up the limits when you think that the monitary gain is dwarfed by the risk of failure, but keep moving up the limits if you think you can beat the higher limit and improve your game at it too. | ||
