low-limit, online tournament questions, Mark, 4. Feb 2003 12:06

Hi all,

I have a few hold'em tournament questions for you. These are all regarding online 1 table, limit, tournaments.

1. Early, in a loose - passive game, i'm in middle position with AK offsuit. a few limpers, i raise, person to my left re-raises, a few more callers and the cutoff caps it. I call along with 6 others total. The passive nature of the game tells me i'm up against some premium hands. the flop is all rags ( 6-4-2 rainbow). I check and the pre-flop raisers start shooting again. Do I fold?

2. With 4 players left, UTG folds pre-flop, I hold A-2 offsuit on the button. Do I play it?

3. With 4 players left, UTG and the button fold. I'm in SB with Q-7 offsuit. I don't know if the BB will call a raise with a hand worse than this. Do i raise, call, or fold? What about 9-6 offsuit?

Thanks

Mark

Hi there...

Online tournaments are fun and can be very profitable when you are playing players that like to play very weak hands and go to far with them.

Anyway, on to answering the questions:

1. Yes i would fold here. You said the game was pretty passive for the most part so all the preflop action and callers in there as well mean something. It means if you miss the flop then you fold. You are probably looking at a premium pair and maybe even some middle pairs, either way you are going to waste alot of chips to play chase the overcards. Fold and wait for a better time to spend the chips.

2. This one i think is player dependent... i mean if the blinds are tight and you think you have a decent shot at stealing then raise. If, on the other hand, the blinds are very aggressive and tend to reraise alot then maybe limp in, or even fold it (depending on your position in the tournament, chip lead, etc.).

3. Fold. and FOLD. Unless the BB is almost all in and you have a sizable chip lead where you can take a small loss. Then it can be worth playing the Q 7 off to try and take him out, but again take into account your standing in the tourney and chips.

I would definitely fold here. Overcards are a money pit in low limit games IMHO,
esp. early in the tourney when the blinds are quite low. You could already be up against a made str8. I am being cynical but have seen it many times in the online low limit tourneys I play.

Provided there was not a monster stack in the big blind I would raise.
Even if there was, provided they were "playing safe" and not getting too
involved, I would probably raise anyway. OTOH if UTG was about to get blinded
out next time I may fold and wait. If they paid top 3, which often seems to be the case,
this last thing would be my most important consideration.

I don't think I would call with either hand. With Q7 I would lean towards raising - provided you havent tried this move too frequently beforehand. If you have had to showdown a weakish hand they may be more likely to call/reraise you. If you have shown strong hands you may just get them to fold. With 96 you can only hope they fold and I would only raise if it is not going to put them all in as you may get a "desperation" call (if that makes sense).

Cheers,
Mark.
