Betting into the raise., Nathaniel Brous, 3. Feb 2003 21:21

If this has been covered in depth in an article or book that you know of, please pass along the title. Let me be more specific. This affects both stud and holdem. The situation is as follows. Your heads-up, all the cards have been dealt and you are to start the betting. You have been calling and have a pretty good idea what your opponent has been betting with. The last card has helped you (though not in an obvious way such as a third or forth in a suit in holdem) and you think you may have your opponent beat. You are trying to maximize your win. You could check and call, but would rather get an extra bet in there (plus your opponent could check behind you). You could check raise, but would rather not face a reraise if you were wrong (and again your opponent could check behind you, foiling your best laid plans). So…you bet, hoping to be raised, but not willing to reraise when it comes back. Of course this only works when your opponent cooperates, but they are known to do this from time to time. It works particularly well if you have shown a bluff earlier (successful or no). Although it would be opponent specific, I think being prepared for this situation could potentially add many a bet (over time) to your bankroll. I hope this is not overly simplistic (something that is instinctive to players). I just never had bothered to think this out until a few minutes ago. I am certain that I have left more than a few bets on the table (due to check/calling a hand that improves). Just thinking out loud here, thoughts welcome. Again, if there is an article on this, please let me know. - Nathaniel

It is very much opponent specific. There are certain types of players who like to check moderately strong hands on the river, but will call if you bet. You need to bet these players. Overly aggressive players, you need to trap with the checkraise, unless he is a bluffer also, in which case, you should often bet into him and let him raise and bluff his chips off.

As stated by Tom, this is all player dependant.
Not value betting the river with good hands costs most players many BB's over the long run. Bet your good hands. Sometimes your opponent will fold, sometimes they'll raise and sometimes they'll call with the best hand. More often than not, they will call with worse hands.
Check-raising the river is only worthwhile if you believe your opponent has a strong enough hand that he will not only bet, but call a raise with. Against an over-aggreresive player, I like to bet out and let them raise, so I can re-raise.
Inducing a bluff is another option to consider. If I believe a player will not call a bet on the river, but will bet if checked to, then checking is the best option to get one more bet.
Read David Sklansky's "Theory of Poker". This will give you some of the info you are looking for.

Tom and NY. Thanks for your posts. Although I focused in on this single situation, you both touched on awareness of opponents tendencies and how you must adjust accordingly. Naturally this is good advice. Perhaps I tend to put too much emphasis on what I perceive my opponents think I am holding, rather than just adding that information to the collective. I appreciate the suggestion for Sklansky's ToP. I have read it twice and gleaned more the second time. It is so chock full of info that I need time to digest it between readings. Evidently it is time for a third round. Thanks. - Nathaniel Brous
