info for how to win structured limit tourney, noiseboy, 3. Feb 2003 10:11

Hello everyone,

I recently played in a limit tournament and was wondering how my strategy should differ than in a regular ring game. I did OK, just playing my regular game, but there were times when the blinds got to be really high and started eating me up even though I built a good sized stack in earlier rounds. Then I got burned on pocket KKs and busted out against AK heads up when an ace but no king came on the flop.

I've read TJ's book on No Limit and Pot Limit, but it seems the structured limit tournament is a bit different. Are there books specific to this type of tournament I should read?

Thanks.

You might try Sklansky's new book Tournament Poker for Advanced Players. Although a bit brief, I think it has the best tournament advice I've read in any books.

TJ and McEvoy have a limit book out similar to your NL one....I never placed in a limit tourney till I read their book

Mcevoy's tournament poker book is pretty good.

I like David S's book too...although too many people put WAY too much emphasis on "The System" for my tastes

Would you recommend the TJ and McEvoy book over the Slansky if I you had to choose? I have HEPFAP and it's a classic, of course, but my impression is that Slansky is more a theoritician and not a tournament specialist.

Thanks for the help.

man....given the reps of TJ/McEvoy, and the skill of David.....

I'm going to honestly go with TJ and McEvoy. You've nailed it on the head that David is more theorical...I don't like saying that....but I learned more from them and how to go by gut feel then I ever did from David...

I love david's books. HEFAP is super....but we're talking tournaments...I'd go with what they got.

(having said that.....I'd almost go with Mcevoy's book over the one he wrote with TJ, but that one with TJ happened to have about 20 examples in it...so it's worth reading.)

but both books are great...truly, I bought TJ/Mcevoy first, Mcevoy 2nd, and still felt like I needed more so I bought Salansky's book...you can never invest too much in decent poker literature....the diviands will pay themselves back several times over...

Oh screw it, I'll probably get all of them in the end, along with Brunson's Super System. After all, I wanna win! Even if I don't agree with some of the strategies in some of the books, it's nice to be able to get a read on someone who is using them.

I would also definitely recommend Sklansky's book on tourneys. I think there are a lot of people playing use his "Gap Concept" and I have found it useful.

Nevertheless, at many tourneys (with moderate buy-ins <$100) the random element gets huge as the blinds begin to get big (I am assuming 20-30 minute rounds).

Similarly, I have found that there are often one or two hands in the course of a tourney that are critical as to whether I make it into the money. If I misplay those hands I am sunk (of course, it is hard to realize that it is a critical hand in real time).

For example, I played a limit tourney at Mohegan Sun this weekend and we were down to 50 people or so, from 160 original. I had A8o UTG and thought about limping, but feared a raise behind me so I folded. Basically 5 or 6 players limped behind me. Flop was K88. More betting action. Turn was an Ace (wouldve given me a FH). Two people went all in. Pot was huge. A guy with AK won the hand. Of course, if I had won it I'dve been set.

I didnt get much in the way of cards for the rest of the day and the blinds ate me up. So it was the critical hand (as far as I can tel). I was eliminated when I went all-in at the 1000-2000 level with A7o and didnt get any help.

Of course, the more expensive tourneys have longer levels (60-120 min) so there is more time to try to outplay your opponents, rather than "the big gamble" brought on by steeply escalating blinds at the end of the smaller tourneys.

Hope this helps.

I see what you mean about the random element when the blinds are high. There were two key hands that could've gone either way, if they had gone my way I would've been in the money. One of the hands I had a flush beaten by a higher flush, when I had a straight draw (open ended), flush draw, two overcards, ie a whole bunch of outs. I know drawing hands are sketchy in tournaments, but I thought if I could just win that one pot, I'd be set. This was when the blinds were very high and there was multi-way action, so I chanced it since the pot was so large, maybe it was a mistake. Then I got short chipped and went all-in with KK, and was unlucky to go against AK.
