| Hey Roy, how are you? I posted a question about skill in poker that i was hoping to get your thoughts on. Could you give me your opinion on how much skill there is in poker as opposed to luck? when you play, do you feel like you are playing a game that is mostly skill, or mostly luck, or 50/50? thank you, i would love to hear your answer?-David O'Connor | ||

| Hey David. Not Roy here, but I have a couple of thoughts. I don't think there is a clear cut answer to your question, except possibly the old stand by in poker circles, "It depends." And it does. If you want to define poker as a single hand played between you and one other continuously different opponent, you may extrapolate some kind of luck vs. skill ratio from that. Then again you may not. Poker skills differ with everyone and there are many different ways to play each and every hand, sometimes with opposing plays being equally correct. For example, early in my poker "whatever" I played with the same group of players for half a year. I booked zero losses, 24 wins with 20 of them being the top winner. I was considered lucky the first 5 times or so before they slowly, grudgingly began to suspect there was more to poker than luck. The point of the story is simple. In this instance poker was 100% skill. Luck simply determined how much I won in an evening, not whether I won or lost. No amount of luck was going to turn my evening into a loss. They were simply overmatched. On the flip side of this is a famous expression, "It gains you nothing to be the seventh best poker player in the world, if you are playing against the top six." If you want to qualify your question with, "When eight bright poker players get together to play poker, what would the percentage of luck be in determining a winner?" you still could not get an answer. If they were all bright, they would decide to go fishing elsewhere. Although it's an interesting question to think about, a concrete percentage of luck vs. skill ( even if it could be proven) is not likely to help you play poker better. A simple answer to your question would be, "In poker, luck plays a major role in the short-term and a minor one in the long-term." - Nathaniel Brous | ||

| Hi David In the long run there is NO luck! The shorter the term of play the more luck is a factor! But in poker there is ultimate justice...those that are supposed to go broke......do go broke...those that are supposed to get rich....do get rich! Roy Cooke on 2.
