Limp raising UTG with aces, TOM WAGGONER, 31. Jan 2003 03:28 | ||

| I would like to know other opinions on limp raising with aces preflop.?, I'm not a big fan of the play, but I can see where it could be usefull in extremely tight aggressive games. I tried it in 20-40 game recently, UTG, I limped, got one caller and both blinds. The small blind ended up flopping a set of fours on me, and I knew the player well, he wouldn't have called if I would have raised. The game was pretty tight, alot of blind chopping, that's why I decided to play it that way. If I would have raised, all I would have got were the blinds. I was hoping that a late position player might raise, so I could reraise preflop. Oh well, thanks for your input. TOM | ||

| It sounds like you had a reasonable situation, it just didn't work out this time. The main problem I've found is that I need to make this play with enough other hands so that I don't mark myself with the big overpair once the flop comes. So now I have to occasionally play for a backraise with hands like AKs, AQs, and JTs. I usually play with about 50% the same faces every session, and it helps to reinforce the reality that if I limp up front it doesn't necessarily mean I have a weak hand. I believe it's something I probably do a little bit too often, and I'm not sure the variance is really worth it in the long run. My opinion is that mixing up ones play preflop is somewhat overrated, but maybe I'm simply not giving my opponents enough credit for attentiveness. | ||

| Hi Tom. I've never been a big fan of this play either, although I think your situation was a good one to give it a shot. The only time I've ever used this play was with a maniac on my left. I knew he would raise, oh 100% unless he had to make a trip to the little maniacs room! Anyway, I also knew alot of players would call or reraise behind him as they had no respect for his raise. I limped, on cue, he rasied, 2 cold-callers and a 3- bet back to me, I capped, all call. Huge pot, perfect situation, I lose to a set of 2's!! Did I mention I wasn't a huge fan of the play! | ||

| I used it for about 2 months in my Mirage 20-40 game and had good results with it. It's very important that the game is aggressive. The primary reason to limp is to get an opportunity to 3-bet | ||

| I willl usually just open the pot up for 2 bets with AA or 3 bet it if somebody opens before me. I am not a big fan of the play as I feel it gives away my hand. A key is that AA must not be the only hand you are going to push, so when you cap a pot, the players can not necessarily put you on AA or KK. Occasionally, it is correct to raise and then reraise a 3 bettor with a hand like AK or AQ, but it depends on the dynamics of the table and the specific opponent you are up against. Dan | ||

| Hi Tom I think it is a good play if the game is right. If you are likely to get calls anyway I think raising is a better play. That said, If you think you are not going to get action/over-aggressive players are behind you/ or you think decsption will have great value then limping can be a better play. Roy Cooke on 31. | Tom, I read all the suggestions you got from your question and agree with all of them. The main focus is "it depends". One that I did not read (it may have been said and I just missed it) was that when you establish an image at a table, say like a tight, aggressive player, which we would all like to be, some players will take shots at that type of player with junk cards, knowing that a tight aggressive player will raise only with big cards or large pairs and if they hit two pair or a straight or flush with any two suited cards, you will stay in till the end and they will make some good money from you. So, stay unpredictable but smart. Know when to get out of a big pair board with junk all over it and players staying in.....hope this helps... | ||
