| I want you guys opinion on the "free card" play. I get the free card all the time and usually check the turn if I don't get my card. I rarely see other people check the turn in similar situations online; rather they try to pick the pot up with the bet. Whats your opinion on the most profitable play. I know it depends on the game and the people you're playing against, but what is consistently your preferred play? Thanks for your replies if you can understand my poor way of stating the question. | ||

| I think you nailed it in your question - "It depends." It's a very common play and in the games I have been playing - live and online - you get 3-bet on the flop and bet into on the turn fairly often. I like it though, it's great for creating action when you flop a strong hand. It sounds like it's working very well for you, since you mention you get the free card all the time. I would imagine you play pretty tight and usually have the goods when you bet, freezing your opponents on the turn. That's great! I generally play too aggressive for the free card play to be much more than 'pot building' in my case. on 29. Jan 2003 12:29 dvbwill wrote: > I want you guys opinion on the "free card" play. | I generally just check as well if the turn card is not the card that makes my hand. But as you said "It depends." If you know your opponents will fold if the turn card is scary (say an Ace or King) then bet. I also bet if the turn card doesnt make my hand but gives me a better draw... such as i have Jh 10h and the flop is 9s 2h 3h now i bet if i make the flush, any Jack or 10, or the Queen or the 8.... even if they call when the Queen or 8 hits I still have an 18 outter (possibly higher if you figure the Jack and 10 are outs) and my opponents wont now what hit them if i make the straight on the river. | I'll generally take the free card when there are several players who check ahead of me on the turn. If there are only one or two players and I think they are weak, I'll bet again with a blank on the turn. One of the main problems with always taking the free card is that you can be bet off the hand on the river when no one hits. You may have to check the turn occasionally with unimproved AK and then call one player for one bet on the river when you are constantly seen making free card plays. | ||
