Starting Hand in Hold-em, Roy Hobbs, 27. Jan 2003 08:25

Being fairly new at the game I haven't logged too many hours playing although, the hours I did log I was successful and found it to be a little tough pre-flop.

In the beginning I saw too many flops because I didn't know how to play pre-flop and was down early. So, I tighten up and played tight conservitive and won a little.

Q: A friend told me to play Hold-em pre-flop like you would BlackJack. Is this true - if your hand is good in blackjack then see the flop? (remember low limit beginner here) My game is more Stud8 and Omaha8 - How can they help me in Hold-em?

Well, playing big cards is generally a good thing in hold'em, so the blackjack analogy is a good start; however, it ignores some things you need to take into account for hold'em hands. First, at a loose table with lots of multi-way pots, suited cards and connected cards become more valuable because when you hit your flushes, you will bring down big pots. Also, it ignores the smaller pairs, which can also be good if they hit trips on the flop. With a lot of players and no raising, even hands like 87 suited can be good, which of course would be horrible in Blackjack. However, the Blackjack analogy can be good to help you remember to play big cards, which you want to do in all game conditions.

While HE is very much a big card game, this is way too oversimplified. Ts9c is a great blackjack hand, but you're a fish if you play that crap in early position in hold'em. Even AsTc (a best BJ hand) is very questionable in EP.

Buy the Sklansky Hold'em Poker book (later the "for Advanced Players" one) and try to memorize his hand groups. Even hand groups have their problems, but it's the best way to start to get a feel for what is playable where. So much of what is playable depends on position and how many others have entered the pot before you and when and where to raise vs just limping. I'm sure you realize this from O8 as position is key in that game, too.

Hi Roy,

I think the best advice I ever got regarding hold-em was to read a book. Lee Jones - Winning low limit holdem or Lou Kiegers Hold-em excellence are two great books with regards to starting requirements.

Regards
HH

Starting hand requirements are very important in holdem. The better your position, the more hands you can play. This is because, starting hands go up and down in value depending on your position. A hand like KJ for example might have to be mucked up front but sometimes can be raised in late position. The type of game also can have a big impact on what kind of starters you can play. In a loose game for example, you can play small and medium suited connectors up front, but you will probably get murdered playing them in a tight aggressive game. It is also important to try and get the looser players on your right, if you can, so you can have positional advantage on them.
