Folding a set, 3Kings, 27. Jan 2003 07:59

I was playing at a 10-20 game and this hand got me to thinking.
I was in 8th position in a moderately aggressive game. I got 33 and although no one had raised to that point and there were 3 callers, I decided to fold. 5 people saw the flop which came K 7 3 with 2 diamonds. Sitting there I am cursing myself because I had folded. There is a bet, a raise, and then a different player reraises. Because I am no longer in the hand I can sit and think without being noticed. The player who three-bet wasn't a strong player. I figured he would call with top pair and maybe raise with two pair. I didn't see him for three betting anything except a set, maybe top two pair. I knew he didn't have KK or 33. I didn't picture him to play K 7. The only thing I could put him on was 7 7 which is what he had.

My question. If I had been in the hand, should I have folded with this read or call him down, knowing at that time I probably had at worst the second best hand? Would anyone else have folded.

If you have made a read (or, in this case, a logical deduction rather than a "read", or tell) and you don't follow it.... why are you thinking about the game at ALL?

With 3 limpers before you I would play 33 for one bet. The implied odds will likely be there if you hit it.

I would have lost a lot of money on the hand myself with this flop. What's the saying; if you lose with a set and you don't lose a lot of money, you didn't play it right. Set over set is usually very expensive for the loser and there's no way I would be laying this down, even if at some point I have to concede that I'm up against a bigger set. I'd have at least called it down to see the cards as the pot would likely be huge. But then I have trouble making the big laydown.

Folding any pocket pair after three limpers is a major mistake.

When you flop the set, you should play it aggressively. I would not have folded on the flop. It's very rarely correct to fold when you get exactly the type of flop you were looking for.

About 3 months ago I folded a set of 10's on the flop when the flop came K-10-5 rainbow. I was in the SB and called a raise from an early position player (known to me as a very tight but solid player) preflop and the BB called. After the flop I bet 20, BB raised to 40 and EP raised to 60. I knew he would not reraise without KKK. I folded and showed the button player my 1010 and he almost fell out of his chair. The EP showed his KKK at showdown and the idiot who also check raised the turn and bet the river threw his AK away in disgust.

Can anyone comment on this ? I am new(ish) to the game and would like to know if it was not equally as possible the guy who made it 3 bets with the KKK to have had AKs or AA?

Sorry i am not critising the guy who dumped the trips, it was obviously the right play for you, but i would like to know for own reference if this is the kind of play that seperates me from the pro's as i play too loose ! ! ( I would have made it 4 bets and have been gutted to have seen the KKK )

Cheers
Rich

Hey Rich,
I am definitely not a pro. This was a unique situation where I had played with this guy many times before and I knew beyond a doubt that he had KKK. I also knew the other player (maniac) and was pretty sure he had Ak or bottom set and I knew he was going to raise at every chance. I had some money in the pot, but not anywhere near what I was going to have to put in to call to the river and decided to dump it since I was 99% sure I was drawing to 1 out. Remember, all hands are relative to the situation. Middle set is a great hand, but when you know any hand is beat, DUMP IT !
