Frequently i see high odds 8 or10 to 1 to call in the small blind. What kind of hands, how bad a hand can you call with here, assuming thcall with here, assuming the big blind is unlikely to raise.

Any pair. Any one gapped unsuited cards down to maybe 64o. Any two gapped suited cards. Suited ace-rag and king-rags. It would be possible to make a case for calling with any two suited cards in this spot, but that would depend on how well you handle situations after the flop. If you call with 93s and flop top pair and one of your suit, you need to be able to release this hand when appropriate. It takes experience to play this kind of trash out of the small blind without giving away chips.

There's calling in the small blind ... and then there's raising. I think you wouldn't just call with any pair, but if you would raise it in early position, then raise here too. Depending on the number of callers, you could probably raise with PPs as low as 66.

Here's my question: From the small blind and several limpers in front, is it wise to raise with Ax suited? You might get to see the turn for free with a pre-flop raise, and if the flop hits you at all (two pair, nut flush draw), it could be rewarding.

Thoughts on this play and other small blind raise opportunities?

I think it would be foolish to raise in the small blind with 4-5 limpers in front of you. Yes, if you did hit the flop, you could make some money. More likely, with Axs you aren't going to hit the flop and checking won't help as with 5 people, the chance of someone hitting the flop is very good. If you just call, this hides your hand and if the flop does hit, you can check raise and thin the field. By raising pre-flop and then betting on the flop, almost any drawing hand would have odds to call. Of course with monster hands, AA KK etc...raise 99% of the time.

a raise in the small blind is a raise for value, and if the field is large, one should raise with a wide variety of hands.

i hate the term 'thin the field'. when you check-raise in a large pot, you're inviting someone to make an error by folding (good draws still have odds to call) or an even bigger error by calling (bad draws no longer have odds).
