Hey Roy, i have been studying poker for the past few months, and I am interested in the amount of skill involved in the game, specifically in tournament poker, which is almost all i play. can it be pretty accurately quantified, such as 75% luck, 25% skill? anyway, from reading your articles, i can see alot of skill, but i just wanted to get get cleared up before i devote my life to the game, lol. Thank you-Dave

Dave, I think you are right about there being more luck than skill, but I
also think it would be hard to measure. The 75 to 25 may be a good enough guess. But, I also think that ring games will give a player greater opportunity to use skill than tournaments. The ever increasing
blinds coupled with the pressure of time is what causes there to be more luck in tournaments than in ring games.

Im not speaking for Roy,however,Ive never read roy speaking on tournaments.I believe Roy would rather have tournament players in his ring games rather than play tounaments. In my mind that should speak to how much luck there is in tournaments.

thank you for your responses. i guess that i could change the question to just poker in general, as far as the level of skill thats involved in it, and not tournaments in particular. please keep up your responses, and i would love to hear from Roy and Mike Caro. Thank you-Dave

I'm only an amateur, but my thinking is that tournaments are progressive. You have to establish yourself somehow at the beginning with a lot of skill, or some luck, but as the game goes on hopefully the luck factor settles down, the less experienced players fall out, and maybe you know more of the players as the field thins, which all bring back the skill factor.
