Where to play in Las Vegas?, Roy Hobbs, 24. Jan 2003 09:16

Hi all - I enjoy reading this forum... Thanks

I am a beginner/intermidiate player who has logged many hours reading, studying, and playing. My take over the last two years (kitchen table with players like myself with low limit casino rules, AC, and online) is even. Yes $0. I have been losing these last outings which knocked me down to even but not discouraged in my ability.

I am going to Vegas in April and would like to know the best casino to play low-limit (either seven card 8, hold-em, or omaha 8). If there is one place to play all three then great or if there are specific places to play each, then that's fine too.

Any recommendations?

RH

I went to LV twice last year and played holdem at both Mirage and Mandalay Bay. In both cases I found the 4-8 games to be beatable. In my experience, the tables are usually made up of 1 or 2 people who've never really played before, 3-4 advanced beginners to intermediates, and 1-3 locals who are there to prey on the tourists.

Basically, I found that it doen't take long to figure out who the locals are and steer clear of them. As for the rest of the players, you have to be patient because some of the novices will carry hands all the way to the river and make a set/straight/flush/big pair on the river, when the odds weren't there. However, over the course of an evening/weekend patience should pay off.

I don't really play stud or omaha, though they seem to always have a stud table going at Mandalay.
Hope this helps.

My favorite for low limit is The Orleans. It's on Tropicana a mile or so West of the strip. If you don't have a car you can take a shuttle from other Coast properties (Barbary, Gold etc) on the strip.

They have a big new poker room which is nonsmoking except in the early morning hours. You can usually find HoldEm Omaha8 and Stud with more than one table to choose from. Lots of locals but plenty of loose action. The daily tournaments are fun too if a bit tough when it gets to the last few tables.

I was last there in May and am looking forward to the next trip.

This is the 1st time I have been on this board...Its Great!
Roy,I have lived in Las Vegas and have played low limit here for yrs,
In my opinion,The low limit games of holdem at the Excaliber are the best in town.
They spread a 2-6 game where you can bet 2-6 on every card.
The game usually has more action than any 4-8 game in town.
I usually avoid the Orleans even though its roght across the street from where I live...TOO MANY ROCKS!!
Excaliber also offers a money wheel where if you get A'S or K's cracked, you spin the wheel and can win $$$$$'S Back.
Check it out.
